Jan 2020 – 311 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Queen Elizabeth”, ca. 1901. A 37-inch oak case in an old finish with some alligatoring; the finials look correct for the 1901 edition, as is the crest and base. Door glass is old and wavy, there is a decal on the bottom that is not original and could be removed with a razor blade. Dial is paper with considerable foxing, the hands correct. The 8-day, time and half-hour strike movement is signed and running, striking a cathedral gong. Spring-driven. in the pendulum stick has been repaired with scotch tape. Decent label on the back. On eBay oak models sell for $250-$300; Horton’s sold one a year ago for $250.

Jan 2022 – #95 Antique American Clocks Ansonia Clock Co. “Queen Elizabeth”, ca 1901. This is the later model of this queen, and the one most commonly seen. The 37-inch oak case has been thoroughly refinished but there are still signs of the old finish in the many grooves. I like the color. The door glass looks original; the paper dial is newer, is signed and has the Ansonia The hands are correct. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is signed and running, striking on a cathedral gong mounted on an Ansonia base. The pendulum bob has a sharp dent. Oak case has not been monkeyed with. Finish is original, now crazed slightly; paper dial, pendulum, all finials and wood parts, big glass, everything is original as far as I can tell. The wood strips around the glass haven’t been touched. The front columns are lighter because that is where it has been handled by everyone and some of the old finish is missing. You can correct that. Most of the old label is on the back of the case. It stands 37 inches high. The 8 day movement is running and strikes a gong on half hour and hours. Ly-Ansonia #620.

Ansosnia Clock Co. hanging clock, “Queen Elizabeth”, ca 1901.

Poplar clock with collectors. It is a good size at 37 inches high, will fit in most any space, and has good lines with just enough decorations to make it appealing. Many turnings like the full columns, finials, and rail at the bottom. The movement is 8 day, half hour gong strike, running, a little out of beat, and it has been in storage a long time, which might mean cleaning and oiling may be necessary. The paper dial is original, same with the walnut case. There has been nothing done to the original finish, dark but looks very good. Now the negatives; on the top two small 2-3 inch flat ornaments, are missing. The tail on the bottom is missing. If you weren’t familiar with this clock you would never know. The tail is an attachment to the back of the case, whereas the tail you see in our picture is a front piece. Fix those hurts and you should increase the value of the clock to $800 plus. Jul 2021 – #169 Antique American Clocks Ansonia Clock Co. “Roy” crystal regulator, ca. 1914. A bow-front crystal regulator that may be the only model Ansonia made with a bowed front glass. It is 11.25 inches tall; the four beveled glasses are chip-free except for a tiny chip in the lower left corner of the front glass, the brass shows light tarnish. The convex porcelain dial is decorated with flowers, the hands are Ansonia. The 8-day time and half-hour strike signed movement is running and striking like a champ. The most recent sale was at RO Schmitt’s in 2016 for $250.

Pleasing bow front style to the base, top and door. The finish is original but it shows some wear and would benefit from a good polishing. All four beveled glasses are perfect. The porcelain dial is signed “Bigelow, Kennard and Co. Inc. Boston”. It is also perfect without any hairlines or chips. It retains the original hands, key and false mercury style pendulum. The round movement is signed and it is in good running order. 8 day with strike on a resonant cathedral gong. 11″ tall.

The base and statue were restored by Chas Carrick. Although Innocence normally appears on Oceanic, there was some latitude allowed in the sales room and the statues are interchangeable. The catalog statues appearing on Oceanic were: Innocence, La Source and Flower. The 3 statues that normally appear on Sybil base are: Gloria, Winter and Melody. It will take further research to determine the variation allowed at the factory or whether these changes occurred in the showroom. Height 27 inches

C.1883, Ansonia “ALHAMBRA”, mantel clock

ebonized wooden cased mantel clock with decorated rubber panels, and in generally good original condition, wear to decorations commensurate with age. Ansonia’s experiments with hard rubber cases, dials and decorations only lasted a few years, and examples in each category don’t turn up that often. This particular model also has a gilt rubber dial (both the inset and the chapter ring). On the rubber panels, there are hand painted scenes of flowers and birds which are difficult to make out. The pendulum is not Ansonia, however replacements are available. The movement is Ansonia’s premium with brass covers for the springs. And lastly, someone cut a small hole in the case bottom for starting the pendulum without turning the clock around on the mantel. Ly illustrates this model in his 1989 Ansonia book, page 182, item 870. Height 19″

Overall, this is a clock that has survived in excellent condition. With a jeweler’s label of C. H. Dygert, where it was cleaned in 1918 for $1.50. Ansonia Clock Company’s large figure clock, a double statue, “Art And Commerce”, ca 1894. The base is black enamel on iron with gold incised designs.

All the other metal including statues, clock tower, and feet, were originally finished Japanese Bronze. That finish has disappeared which seems to be common for these statue clocks, and looks clean enough to accept a new finish of your choice, or do what most collectors do, leave it with a pewter or gun metal looking finish. The case has all its parts and accessories, the paint on the iron base is good but the gold is practically gone. The large clock is 25.5″ wide and 20.5″ high. The beveled glass, signed two piece dial, hands, and open escapement, are all near perfect. The back door, pendulum, and 8 day signed movement are also clean and near perfect. LyAnsonia No. 488. Mr.Ly’s most recent price guide listed the value of this model as $2500.
