    Jan 2021 – 6 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Georgia”, ca. 1892. Nobody does black mantel clocks like Ansonia, and there are four outstanding examples in this auction. The Georgia stands just over 13 inches tall and 17.5 inches wide with high relief alcoves and figures across the front and sides. Here the alcoves are painted silver and the figures are in gold; you can find examples with bronze alcoves and gold alcoves all with contrasting figures – see for example #7. The repainting was professionally done and shows; the iron case has also been re-lacquered. There is a two-piece signed dial with a visible escapement behind a beveled glass in the French sash; the pallets are ruby. The 8-day movement is signed with a rack and snail strike mechanism; it is running and striking on a cathedral gong without issue. There is no rear door. Schmitt’s sold a Georgia in 2017 for $2000; Horton’s sold one in 2016 for 1875. $1800-$2000.

    Jan 2022 – #27 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Georgia”, The Georgia stands just over 13 inches tall and 17.5 inches wide with a high-relief bronzed front and silvered figures in the alcoves. The decorative metalwork has been professionally restored but the case itself was not, and it shows a few small chips on the top and edges. There is a two-piece signed dial with cartouche numbers and fancy pierced hands, and a visible escapement with steel pallets. There is a thick beveled glass in the sash. The 8-day movement is signed with a rack and snail strike mechanism; it is running and striking on a cathedral gong without issue. There is no rear door. AAC sold a very similar Georgia last winter for $1600. $1000-$1600.

    This is one of half dozen or so large clocks that the collectors covet. One recently sold at Bob Schmitt’s auction for $3472, that was in “as found” condition, which means it had some problems, and we have seen them sell on EBay for $4750. This large case, with statues on front and sides, is 13.5 inches high, 17.5 inches wide. The statues and top ornament are silver and all other metal ornaments are Syrian Bronze, and the iron main case was enameled black. The fancy dial has cartouche numerals, fancy hands and inner dial. The 8-day movement has been cleaned and serviced so you can expect it to be worry free for some time. This clock should be as nice as any “Georgia” out there. Ly-Ansonia, page 382-383.

    It has an8 day movement that strikes on a wire gong. The striking models are very rare. I had a time only model in each of the previous two catalogs. Excellent29 inch walnut case has been restored where needed and is now clean, polished. I can’t vouch for the originality of the finials. If they are expertly made they can fool me. The zinc dial is a replacement. The movement, gong base, and pendulum, are signed Ansonia, and original to this clock. The gold in the etchings around the glass and edges of the case are bright and probably have been strengthened. This is 3 catalogs in a row we have had a Hanging Monogram, and all 3 have been slightly different.

    This early spring driven 8 day timepiece is as original as I have seen of this model, and I have only seen four others. Of course it has been refinished and it is immaculate like all of this collection. The one really outstanding part of this clock is the gold and black glass. The original putty is still in place. One top finial was broken at the base and has been pinned and glued. I doubt it will make a shipping trip without needing glue again. Small thing. There is a new paper dial on the old pan. The small rectangular movement held by three mounting blocks, one of which is now held to the case with machine screws, rather than fill the old holes and use regular screws. Oh well, no big deal I guess. To remind some collectors not familiar with this model, the pendulum hangs off center. Ly-Ansonia #547.

    This clock was offered as a silver plated model. The bezel has a minor dent at the 10 o’clock position. The movement cover on the back of the case has an elongated dent on the rim. The case itself has a small dent on the back, right. Much of the original silver plate has worn off. The original dial has turned a little brown from age, and the hands are original. No chips or cracks, no crazing, but some yellowing/discoloration, with some loss to the gold highlighting. Beveled glass in a plain bezel with a flat, decorated porcelain dial with the Ansonia logo. The round, signed, 8-day time and half-hour strike movement does not want to run but will strike.

    This is an outstanding Royal Bonn case in colors I have never seen before, dark chocolate browns, yellow roses, and more unusual no gold gilt. The case is perfect. Bezel, dial, hands, open escapement movement, all are perfect. This clock came with the Miller collection. Case is 14 1/2 inches wide, 12 inches high. It should sell in the $1300-$1800 range.     Another excellent clock from the same collection. It is a big clock, standing 14 1/2 inches high, 11 1/2 inches wide. 8 day, gong strike, Rocco sash, beveled glass, 2 piece porcelain dial and open escapement. The only thing keeping me from saying this clock is perfect, are 4 faint little hairlines, which you could probably make disappear with a cleaning, or just install a replacement dial ring. It wouldn’t bother me, just like it is, but if you are trying to collect a perfect set of Ansonia Royal Bonn’s you will want to change the dial. Primary color is white, with a lot of light blue, rose, yellow and purple flowers, and a smattering of gold around the case edges. More flowers on top and sides than you see on most models. Complete, and a very nice Royal Bonn. Ly-Ansonia, page 607.

    This is an especially pretty blue and white case. The top center tip got broken off and was re-glued slightly out of alignment, and the glue has discolored. There is some loss of the gold highlights on the lower areas of the case. Open escape movement is complete and sound; the porcelain dial is excellent with original hands.     One of their larger cases, 14.5 inches wide and almost 12 inches high. The colors are dazzling in pastel shades of blue, green, yellow, rose, and gold for accent. The movement, as usual, is 8 day, strikes a standing gong on the hours and half hours. Like most of Ansonia’s finer porcelain clocks, it has a beveled glass, 2 piece porcelain dial, open escapement, and original hands. The dial ring has some faint hairlines and a tiny chip around one arbor, none of which is bad enough to get excited. I found another 2-piece dial in nice condition, which I will ship with the clock and you install it. This is a very attractive clock and I see some good appreciation in value once the dial is changed. Ly-Ansonia No. 2584.

Colorsare outstanding and primarily in pastel shades of blue, green, yellow, roseand the usual spattering of gold highlights. The movement is 8 day, halfhour gong strike; visible escapement dial is 2 pieces. Slight dial damagearound the strike side winding arbor, and faint hairlines in a couple ofother places. Heavy beveled glass, French sash. You may note white linesbetween the two flowers. They are like stretch marks and are the result offiring the porcelain when the clock was made.     This one is a beauty, primarily hot pink, with rose, white, yellow, and pink flowers, front and sides. The name, La Seine and the Royal Bonn mark on the back of the case. 8 day, half hour gong strike, running just fine. Great porcelain dial, American sash, beveled glass, clean and polished inside and out. Caseis 11-1/2 inches high, 10 inches wide. A really pretty clock. Ly-Ansonia No. 2502.

    Condition – Very pretty blue green case in very fine condition with very little wear to the applied gold accents. Porcelain dial is perfect and hands are proper. Movement is signed; has been oiled recently and does tick and strike, but a bit dirty. Rear cover is a replacement. American sash and bezel are pressed brass. Height 11.5 inches

    Condition: Hard rubber case in very nice clean restored condition. These models were originally painted black to imitate the enameled iron cases popular at the time, which made for a much lighter case that could be molded in one piece and be less costly to ship. The gilding in the incised decoration is worn. Dial has some loss to the gilding surrounding the numbers. Hands are original. Premium nickel plated movement with spring covers is signed and has recently been professionally serviced and is running briskly; minor note: pendulum is replaced. Height 11.5 inches
