Ansonia Clock Co. hanging clock, “Niobe”, ca 1904.

This is a very nice original clock. True, the case has been rubbed/polished, not refinished in the sense a harsh stripper cleaner was used. As I keep repeating, very few clocks are “refinished” anymore. Rubbing with a mild polish removes the darkest of the smoke and pollutants. This oak case is 45″ tall, of course the old chains with large wood acorns on the ends, fall much lower. Barley twist brass weights and the cast brass pendulum bob, are original. The clock is complete, has had no evident repairs, and we believe everything on and in the clock came from the factory. The 8 day movement is signed, strikes a cathedral gong hours and half hours. It has a heavy metal silver dial, raised numerals and minute marks, correct hands, and a cast inner dial. Brass ornaments all over the case, all intact and all original. This model usually sells at the big clock auctions between $4000 and $5000. Ly-Ansonia No. 577.

Ansonia Clock Co. near the top of the line for crystal regulators, the “Regal”, ca 1905.

This metal and glass clock is exceptionally heavy and is comprised of a multitude of cast metal pieces. It originally came out with a rich gold finish, now it is aged and has attracted some household pollutants that need to be cleaned off. I would estimate at least three fourths of the original finish is still present. The case is all original and complete. We see no breaks or repairs. The four beveled glasses are perfect excepting for some grime around the edges. A good cleaning would improve the case immensely. The clock is 18″ high, and if you were to remove all the cast ornaments you would get down to a plain crystal regulator, four glasses and the brass rectangular case. The pendulum is large and perfect. The movement is 8 day, rack count, gong strike and is a strong runner. I have turned it every which way inspecting the glasses and case parts, and the pendulum just kept on swinging. Two piece porcelain dial is signed, has some faint hairlines, and has the original hands and open escapement. Ly-Ansonia, pages 109-110. We have seen this model sell all over the board, depending on the type auction, from $5500 to $6720 at a northeast auction just a few years ago. In those cases it is the unsuspecting internet bidders that pay the high dollar.

Antique Ansonia "Sibyl and Summer" Model Clock (#0875)

Ansonia Clock Co. statue clock, “Sibyl and Summer”, C. 1904. This is a hard one to find in this combination of base and statue. It has the original Syrian Bronze finish on both pieces, very little wear or oxidation, a fine clock that we acquired with a large group of other Ansonia clocks. 24″ high, 10.75″ wide at the base. Nice one piece porcelain dial, beveled glass, original pendulum and back door. The base, “Sibyl” was used with many statues, all attached to the base by 2 pegs on the bottom of the statue. We don’t find them any nicer unless it is one Bruce Baziluk has refinished. Ly-Ansonia #1499 is the base with a “Winter” statue. “Summer” is seen at #2845.
