    The case has suffered some paint loss and the lions are bare spelter at this point. However the clock retains a perfect porcelain dial with open escapement, and the movement (though dirty) is the premium version with brass barrels surrounding the springs. Runs +strikes. Height 11′

    The iron case has been touched up and nicely polished, and some one has added an aluminum base to it (about 3/8 inch), and installed an Ingraham pendulum, also has a coffee can lid for rear cover. This clock retains its original hard rubber dial, though the silver background of the numerals is now replaced by the white residue of dried polish. The rubber dials (and even rubber cases for a while) were an effort by Ansonia to reduce shipping damage. The few mentioned items can be corrected with replacement parts from Timesavers, and the bonus is it has high line damascene plated movement. Height 11.25 inches with base.

    Usually pictured with an urn or bust sitting on top. Red marble on the ends. Case is 11 inches high, and 11 1/2 inches wide. A “clock improver” person cut a slit in the wood base to access the pendulum. Evidently the 4 inch hole in the back wasn’t adequate. 8 day, strikes hour and half hour on a gong. 2 piece porcelain dial is very good, as are the beveled glass, gilt sash and bezel. Complete with pendulum and back cover. Ly-Ansonia No.1000.

This particular clock with solid porcelain dial (cream colored). The case is white with light blue accents and orange/brown pansies. Retains crisp rear trademark and model name. The movement appears to have never been serviced, but still ticks and strikes, and there are no chips in the porcelain. Height 11º”

    The case, dial and glass are all in near mint condition. The clock stands 10 inches tall, 8 inches wide and 4 inches deep. There are no breaks, chips, cracks or crazing that we can find. The colors are gorgeous and sharp. The case has lots of details with curls and swirls. The bezel is brass with beveled glass. The dial is porcelain and beautiful. It displays the Ansonia logo just below the center. The clock has a brass time and strike eight day movement. It strikes on a coiled gong on the half and counts the hour. The back of the case shows the Royal Bonn crest with the initials ‘TM’ and ‘1755’ and ‘La Teste’. Impressed in the porcelain is the number 1500, the initials GY and a small circular stamp that is not legible. The bottom has a wooden cover. Underneath we found the numbers 3130/6, 4880 and 42. The clock is keeping excellent time.

    Octagon case is 11″ on the back edge, rounded on top with a 7″ dial, brass sash and flat glass. Bezel is hinged, has a catch on the left side. Three hands, seconds hand suspect, numerals were highlighted. Dial is signed, “Ansonia / 8 Day Time / The Ansonia Clock Co., Manufacturers, U.S.A.” No evidence there was ever a label on the back, oak case cleaned of any black residue, so our collector may have cleaned the label remnants off at the same time. He had a house full of nice clocks, but he was not your normal collector. He collected one day clocks as well as eight day, he highlighted many dial numerals, he did not hesitate to put a new bob in a clock, and he cleaned his cases but did not put any polish/feeder back on the wood.     For those unfamiliar with this portion of the Ansonia line, Ansonia owned a rubber company and for around 5 years offered these molded hard rubber versions of their popular black mantle clocks. They are light and durable and much more practical than the iron and marble clocks they competed against, but were discontinued for lack of sales. They are uncommon, and yet we offer a half dozen in this week end’s sale. Note also that they are listed in Lys’s Ansonia book under “Mantel Clocks enameled Iron cases, pages 307-308. I am sure if Mr. Ly had realized they were rubber at the time of printing, he would have put them in their own category. Height 17.5 inches

    The Ansonia catalog called the decorations on this case “engraved”. Note this clock has the optional hard rubber dial with gilt numerals (you could choose either the porcelain or rubber dial), also with open escapement and original brass hands. Height 17.5 inches

    Condition: there is a crack in the chapter ring at 1:30, now dark, but no porcelain missing. The movement has dried oil and dirt and will need cleaning. The hands are improper replacements; no pendulum (replacements readily available). The case itself is in good shape and retains a very good label (with wear) that is still legible. An uncommon clock that is sure to appeal to the Ansonia collector. Height 17.5 inches

    Jan 2020 – 20 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Monarch”, ca. 1880. A nice example of this higher-end parlor clock from Ansonia, almost 25 inches high with a beautiful walnut finish, not too dark and not to glossy. The door glass is old with a nice stencil in good condition; the heavy metal dial with an enlarged sash retains the turquoise paint in the indentations, giving the clock an interesting look. This in-painting is usually polished away. The signed paper dial is evenly yellowed and could be replaced; the hands may be replacements. The interior backwall is covered in black paper, still mostly all there; there is a label on The signed, 8-day movement is running reliably and striking on the hour on a cathedral gong; there is also an alarm that strikes on a bell (untested). The pendulum is an unusual Ansonia-signed adjustable pointer model that was probably an upgrade; there is also a signed Ansonia key. The urn on top is probably a replacement but it is stylistically correct. Some Monarchs have a grain-painted finish on the base and a brass ornament behind the drawer pull, but many do not, so I think this is year-to-year Monarchs in good condition like this one still sell for $350-$450 at major auction houses; Horton’s sold one in very similar condition in 2017 for $450.

    Jan 2020 – 53 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Monarch”, ca. 1880. A popular Ansonia shelf clock with a very fancy cast brass dial surround and elaborate carvings. It stands 24 inches tall in walnut. The case is in good condition with a few nicks and scratches. The urn finial is missing the topmost piece, and the side arms may be replacements; the door glass is a proper replacement. The dial is painted and signed; the 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking on a nickel bell and there is a fancy two-barrel pendulum and a signed beat scale. Compartment in the bottom front to store the key. example; these still sell for upwards of $300.

    Jul 2021 – #193 Antique American Clocks Ansonia Clock Co. “Monarch”, ca. 1880. A 25-inch walnut case with a light finish; the urn finial on top is missing its wings. Note the burl walnut around the base. The door glass is likely original, retaining most of the silver stencil. The cast brass dial bezel is outstanding, retaining the turquoise coloring; the dial is a glossy paper replacement with some foxing. The 8-day time and half-hour strike movement is signed and running, striking a cathedral gong on cue. The two-barrel pendulum is correct. An alarm strikes on a brass bell, untested. Black paper inside, a dark label on the back. The drawer holds a key. A very nice example but for the missing wings on top. AAC sold a slightly better example a year ago for $292.

    This is one of their high end mantle clocks, has a wood urn on top, a drawer in the base, it is doubled on the sides meaning two ornaments in duplicate on each side, a ladies bust on top, and some intricately carved pieces all over. The 24.5″ case is made of black walnut, has bronze ornaments and a French sash. This clock has the original crusty finish, and is very dark and smoky. The case has the original dial, fancy bezel, a special two barrel pendulum, and a signed 8 day movement with the alarm movement in the bottom. The drawer was stuffed with newspaper clippings and a letter written by an exotic dancer who owned the clock and sold it to some friends. It seems the dancer shot her husband who had taken up with a younger woman. She kept a 16′ long python in the house. No wonder the husband crawled in bed with another woman. Another article told about the python and how she was selling her large home and moving to Europe. The letter was written to the couple who had bought this clock from her.     The case has its original finish with minor scratches. There is a small damaged area on the molding on the lower right side. The paper dial is in good condition but has darkened in places. The stenciled glass is original with some loss of the pattern towards the bottom. The two scrollwork decorative handles for the sides of the top urn finial are missing, but unfinished replacements are included. Nearly complete label on the back. Very nice glass front pendulum. The movement ticks and strikes, but was not tested long term.

    As usual in these complicated, designed clocks, the cases varied slightly year to year. This case (compared to pictures in the Ansonia books and other Monarch’s I have had) differs in a few ways. Starting at the top, this one has a finial instead of the common urn. The bottom drawer has only a knob, no applied wood piece, no evidence of ever having anything different. Etchings all around the sides of the door are different. Dark black walnut case is 25″ high, never refinished, excellent glass, French sash, original 2 piece paper dial, brass rings, 2 jar pendulum, and original label on the back. Burl walnut was used around the base and the top. The case being so dark doesn’t do the burl walnut justice. 8 day, half hour strike, running. This clock has been in storage several years, probably should be serviced. Ly-Ansonia #1780.

    Several different clock companies made this model but this case appears to most closely resemble Ansonia’s “Monarch”. The dial and bezel are definitely Ansonia. The movement is a signed E. N. Welch, Forestville, Conn and appears to be original to this case. Tran duy Ly’s Welch book indicates that such cases may be found with Welch movements, so this is not necessarily an incorrect clock. The case has been refinished and is now a very light walnut color with a high gloss finish. The paper dial is original and in nice condition with some age darkening, The hands are period. The stenciled door glass is original. The pendulum rod is a replacement and will need to be cut down to fit properly.

    this fancy case has some crusty varnish but a good overall look. The multicolor bezel and patterned glass tablet are fine, the bottom drawer is intact, the paper dial has darkened a bit and has a stain by the 6, the two-barrel pendulum has one dent, and the rear label indicates both Ansonia and Brooklyn manufacturing. Ht 24.5″

    Condition: generally very good condition with original finish intact. The dial is original, with the zinc pan oxidizing and has created bumps under the paper, and trim ring is oxidized. Ears on top finial have been glued a couple of times. Clock was serviced in New Holland, PA by Wm. H. Dorwart, his 1930 sticker on back of case. Ht 24.5″

    The original paper dial has turned rather dark from age. The tablet, hands and pendulum are original. The beat scale has some minor paint flaking. The clock retains part of the original top finial with the pan and center finial, but the small turned base and two side arms that attach to the finial are missing. There are other small chips of wood here and there; the faux graining on the drawer and curved panels will need restoration as it is dark and partly missing. Still has lots of potential. Height 24.5 inches

This is a later version than the 1880 model usually shown and does not have the 2 little circular bronze busts on the base, just has fluted molding. The case retains its original beat scale, “regulator” pendulum & “crystal palace” bezel, plus a clean label on the back. Gong has been relocated, but is original.     in good original condition. These are white metal castings with fine detail and are relatively fragile. Many that we see have fallen off the shelf and the cow catcher broken and so on; this one is still intact (wear to gilding and silvering commensurate with age). Although the dial is dark and there are minor nicks and scrapes, this is still a good example and with rear wind movement running. See also lot 550. Height 7″

    this clock lived by the sea and the lower portion of the outer brass bezel corroded away, and this allowed some moisture to reach the paper dial and cause some discoloration. There is a horizontal bar that should be soldered at the rear edge of the “wheels” to keep this from tipping backwards, and that bar is missing. It does still stand OK, but you do want to be careful. Ht 7.8″

    One item that keeps this from being excellent is that the handle is replace with a smooth one from another clock. It is supposed to be a little cast handle. Also the hands are replace and a little too large and bulky for the job. Movement ticks and stops. Still a cute clock. Height 4 inches
