Ansonia Clock Co. Royal Bonn porcelain clock, "Relay", ca 1904.

Ansonia Clock Co. Royal Bonn porcelain clock, “Relay”, ca 1904.

This is a bright pink case, pink flowers on all sides and top, a lot of gold, making this a very attractive case. One of the large cases being 13 1/2 inches wide, 11 1/4 inches high. Open places on each side making it very different. There is a small sliver off on the rear bottom, and a place on top the size of a match head that could be touched with fingernail polish. Both places hardly noticeable. This may not be a clock for the purists who are attempting to collect a set of perfect Ansonia porcelain or Royal Bonn clocks. Very nice 2 piece porcelain dial, open escapement in the center. 8 day, half hour gong strike, a good runner, pendulum is not original but Timesavers can remedy that. Ly-Ansonia No.2591.

Ansonia Clock Co. porcelain cased, “Relay”, C. 1904.

This is a large clock that is 13.5″ wide and 11.25″ high. I know it isn’t one of the La whatever, but it is a very stylish and colorful case, clean as a pin, shining all over, brass shining. All Ruby, even the flowers are darker than most, but an abundance, and some would say an overabundance of gold striping. Note the open pretzel looking things on the sides. Outstanding 2 piece porcelain dial, open escapement, hands, thick beveled glass in the French style, machined bezel, and American sash. Completely original but with a couple of small imperfections; a place on the top the size of a match head that must have been a chip, now touched up with paint; a sliver on the back bottom edge is missing. Neither of the imperfections can be seen unless you are trying to find them. 8 day movement, strikes half hours on a gong, runs good, has a correct pendulum and back door. Ly-Ansonia #2591.

C.1885, Ansonia Clock Co., “Regulator No. 17”, with restorations.

This is a solid oak case and is VERY heavy. It was in a barber shop in Michigan for some time, with limited space, and the Victorian bottom and a portion of the top were removed. Later, a cabinet maker created a lovely bottom and top which look OK, but are very different from those shown in the 1894 Ansonia catalog (see Ly, No. 571, page 176). He managed to stain them a caramel color, leaving the old finish on the main case intact. The 2-jar Mercury pendulum is antique, but may have come from another clock (it is a Waterbury pendulum). The mercury is clean, but can not be taken to the hotel and must be picked up in Salem, NH. The movement is a typical pinwheel with center seconds hand and porcelain dial in xlnt condition. It is running robustly. Impressive despite the case modifications. Height 86 inches

About the Ansonia “Regulator A” Clock

The Ansonia “Regulator A” clock model is a testament to the intricate craftsmanship and precision engineering that defined the Ansonia Clock Company during its golden era. This timepiece belongs to the regulator category, characterized by its pendulum-driven mechanism designed for high accuracy in timekeeping.

Typical case materials for the Regulator A include mahogany, walnut, and oak, showcasing the rich wood grain in a simple yet elegant design. The rectangular case, often adorned with brass trim and a hooded dial, adds to its timeless appeal. Notably, later versions of this model feature a more ornate cast-brass decoration, further enhancing its visual allure.

Produced between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the Regulator A represents the transitional phase from traditional Victorian design to the more streamlined Art Nouveau style. Its production period makes it a valuable addition to any antique clock collection.

What sets the Ansonia Regulator A apart as a collectible piece is its exceptional craftsmanship and the precision of its movement. The large, brass-faced dial with Roman numerals and minute track adds to its historical charm. Notable features include a striking spring-driven mechanism, which replaced the traditional weight-driven system, and the adjustable pendulum for fine tuning accuracy.

The Ansonia Regulator A offers not only an accurate timekeeping device but also a beautiful piece of American horology history. Its versatile design makes it suitable for both mantel and wall placement, adding a touch of elegance to any room in a collector’s home.

Ansonia Clock Co. hanging clock, “Regulator A”, ca 1906.

Black walnut case is veneered, good for the most part, but has some bad veneer on the bottom right side, a section about 16″ long appears to have been close to heat. It would need new veneer if you want to make the case look good. Secondly, I would definitely have the dial repainted or put a new paper dial on it. It is the original signed dial but is dark and oil stained. Otherwise this is a very nice clock. It has an excellent Regulator A glass, correct brass bob and wood stick, good paper label inside, and the original hands. This clock has an 8 day brass movement, time only, and spring driven. Black walnut case is 32 inches long, retaining the original finish, practically all intact, a smidgum of black paint rubbed off the right side of the bezel, insignificant really. Excellent glasses, putty still in place in the bezel. Good pendulum, and even an original signed key. The only fault I see is that the original paper dial has come unglued in a place or two, and the expansion caused a small tear. I believe you can make the repairs and completely hide the tear. The old label in the base also came unglued. I put it in an envelope, hopefully to keep it intact. The movement is 8 day, half hour gong strike. We rarely see a Reg.A this nice. Ly-Ansonia No. 660.

This is an 8 day timepiece that will give you the correct time and not wake you during the night. A few problems and a lot of good points that is why the minimum is low. Ly-Ansonia #660. Ansonia Clock Co. hanging “Regulator A”, ca 1906.

This is basically just a long drop but Ansonia added some extra touches like polished black walnut veneer, black trim around the bezel, made the bottom glass a little more attractive, and the brass pendulum bob is quite a bit larger than what you see on most long drop clocks. Movement is 8 day, hour and half hour gong strike, and of course running. The original dial is soiled over all but a small section on the left side. I would sure darken that to make it look like the rest of the dial. There are some small hauling scuff marks and some veneer repair on the lower part of the door and case. A professional job that doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb. Ly-Ansonia #660. In very nice condition we see these selling for 600 dollars to 800 dollars and in some cases even more.

  • Antique Ansonia “Regent” Model Clock

    About the Ansonia “Regent” Clock

The Ansonia “Regent” clock, produced by the renowned Ansonia Clock Company, is a mantel clock of exceptional quality and design that has captivated antique clock collectors for centuries. This masterpiece, manufactured between 1859 and 1924, represents the pinnacle of American clockmaking during the Victorian era.

The Regent’s case materials and designs exhibit a refined elegance characteristic of Ansonia’s craftsmanship. Typically, the clock is encased in marble or walnut with brass accents, showcasing a harmonious blend of durability and aesthetic appeal. The design, inspired by the neoclassical revival style, features intricate carvings, gilt-bronze details, and a domed hood top, making it a striking addition to any antique collection.

What makes the Ansonia Regent clock particularly collectible is its combination of exquisite workmanship, historical significance, and rarity. This model was produced in limited quantities, with only around 100 units being made each year, which has contributed to its scarcity in today’s market. Notable features include a precision movement, a swing-out hood for easy winding, and a hidden pendulum compartment, all of which demonstrate Ansonia’s commitment to innovation and functionality.

In addition to these qualities, the Regent clock is also appreciated for its cultural importance as a symbol of American industrial prowess during the late 19th century. This historical significance, coupled with its exceptional craftsmanship and rarity, makes the Ansonia Regent clock an essential piece for any serious antique clock collector.

Ansonia Clock Co. near the top of the line for crystal regulators, the “Regal”, ca 1905.

This metal and glass clock is exceptionally heavy and is comprised of a multitude of cast metal pieces. It originally came out with a rich gold finish, now it is aged and has attracted some household pollutants that need to be cleaned off. I would estimate at least three fourths of the original finish is still present. The case is all original and complete. We see no breaks or repairs. The four beveled glasses are perfect excepting for some grime around the edges. A good cleaning would improve the case immensely. The clock is 18″ high, and if you were to remove all the cast ornaments you would get down to a plain crystal regulator, four glasses and the brass rectangular case. The pendulum is large and perfect. The movement is 8 day, rack count, gong strike and is a strong runner. I have turned it every which way inspecting the glasses and case parts, and the pendulum just kept on swinging. Two piece porcelain dial is signed, has some faint hairlines, and has the original hands and open escapement. Ly-Ansonia, pages 109-110. We have seen this model sell all over the board, depending on the type auction, from $5500 to $6720 at a northeast auction just a few years ago. In those cases it is the unsuspecting internet bidders that pay the high dollar.

    About the Ansonia “Reflex” Clock

The Ansonia “Reflex” clock, produced between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is a captivating mantel clock that graced numerous homes during its time. Known for their high-quality craftsmanship, the Reflex model is one of Ansonia Clock Company’s most celebrated creations.

The Reflex clock features an intricate cast-iron case with a distinctive elongated oval shape, which gives it a unique and elegant appearance. The case is often adorned with ornate floral and geometric patterns, adding to its visual appeal. Notable materials used in the construction of the Reflex clock include brass and copper for parts like pendulums and weights, contributing to its sturdy build and longevity.

What makes the Ansonia Reflex clock a desirable collectible is its combination of aesthetic charm and mechanical precision. The clock’s primary feature, the “Reflex” mechanism, allows the pendulum to swing from side to side instead of the traditional front-to-back motion, providing an interesting visual display while accurately keeping time. This novelty aspect, combined with Ansonia’s reputation for excellence in clockmaking, makes the Reflex model a sought-after addition to any antique clock collection.

Other notable features include the clock’s Westminster chime option and the variety of finishes available, such as gilt, patina, and black. The refined design and innovative mechanics of the Ansonia Reflex clock make it a significant piece in the history of American horology, ensuring its enduring appeal among collectors.
