About the Ansonia “Regulator A” Clock
Title: Ansonia Regulator A Clock Model – A Collector’s Guide
The Ansonia “Regulator A” clock model is a testament to the intricate craftsmanship and precision engineering that defined the Ansonia Clock Company during its golden era. This timepiece belongs to the regulator category, characterized by its pendulum-driven mechanism designed for high accuracy in timekeeping.
Typical case materials for the Regulator A include mahogany, walnut, and oak, showcasing the rich wood grain in a simple yet elegant design. The rectangular case, often adorned with brass trim and a hooded dial, adds to its timeless appeal. Notably, later versions of this model feature a more ornate cast-brass decoration, further enhancing its visual allure.
Produced between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, the Regulator A represents the transitional phase from traditional Victorian design to the more streamlined Art Nouveau style. Its production period makes it a valuable addition to any antique clock collection.
What sets the Ansonia Regulator A apart as a collectible piece is its exceptional craftsmanship and the precision of its movement. The large, brass-faced dial with Roman numerals and minute track adds to its historical charm. Notable features include a striking spring-driven mechanism, which replaced the traditional weight-driven system, and the adjustable pendulum for fine tuning accuracy.
The Ansonia Regulator A offers not only an accurate timekeeping device but also a beautiful piece of American horology history. Its versatile design makes it suitable for both mantel and wall placement, adding a touch of elegance to any room in a collector’s home.

Ansonia Clock Co. hanging clock, “Regulator A”, ca 1906.
Black walnut case is veneered, good for the most part, but has some bad veneer on the bottom right side, a section about 16″ long appears to have been close to heat. It would need new veneer if you want to make the case look good. Secondly, I would definitely have the dial repainted or put a new paper dial on it. It is the original signed dial but is dark and oil stained. Otherwise this is a very nice clock. It has an excellent Regulator A glass, correct brass bob and wood stick, good paper label inside, and the original hands. This clock has an 8 day brass movement, time only, and spring driven. Ansonia Clock Co. wall clock, “Regulator A”, ca 1906.
Black walnut case, polished veneer, 32 inches high. 8 day, time and calendar, running. The hands and pendulum bob are original. The gold around the door is all there, just a little dirty. I don’t believe this case has ever been cleaned, and it doesn’t really need to be. The label is about 75% on the backboard. New paper dial looks very good. Ly-Ansonia No.660.

Ansonia Clock Co. “Regulator A”, ca 1906.
Black walnut case is 32 inches long, retaining the original finish, practically all intact, a smidgum of black paint rubbed off the right side of the bezel, insignificant really. Excellent glasses, putty still in place in the bezel. Good pendulum, and even an original signed key. The only fault I see is that the original paper dial has come unglued in a place or two, and the expansion caused a small tear. I believe you can make the repairs and completely hide the tear. The old label in the base also came unglued. I put it in an envelope, hopefully to keep it intact. The movement is 8 day, half hour gong strike. We rarely see a Reg.A this nice. Ly-Ansonia No. 660.

Ansonia Clock Co., hanging clock, “Regulator A”, C. 1906.
Polished black walnut veneer case is 32″ high; gold around bottom glass is good, but dirty. Brass bezel and bob have not been polished. Bezel latch is in place but won’t latch properly. Dial pan and dial are replaced. Good large label covers the lower half of the case. I believe the lower glass is a replacement. This is an 8 day timepiece that will give you the correct time and not wake you during the night. A few problems and a lot of good points that is why the minimum is low. Ly-Ansonia #660. Our estimate .

Ansonia Clock Co. hanging “Regulator A”, ca 1906.
This is basically just a long drop but Ansonia added some extra touches like polished black walnut veneer, black trim around the bezel, made the bottom glass a little more attractive, and the brass pendulum bob is quite a bit larger than what you see on most long drop clocks. Movement is 8 day, hour and half hour gong strike, and of course running. The original dial is soiled over all but a small section on the left side. I would sure darken that to make it look like the rest of the dial. There are some small hauling scuff marks and some veneer repair on the lower part of the door and case. A professional job that doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb. Ly-Ansonia #660. In very nice condition we see these selling for 600 dollars to 800 dollars and in some cases even more.

C.1900, Ansonia Clock Co., New York, “Regulator A” , in walnut, 8-day time and strike.
