Ansonia Clock Co. Royal Bonn case, “La Drome”, ca 1901.

This is another fine clock from the Miller collection and a model we have never seen before, probably very difficult to find if you are an Ansonia collector. In addition to being rare, it is a very rare color, Cobalt Blue predominately, with creams, whites, and pinks in the centers. The dark blue is covered with faint gold designs. There are plenty of gold accents, but only on the cobalt blue. Perfect two-piece porcelain dial, correct hands, open escapement, beveled glass, and Rocco sash. The case is 15 inches wide and 12 inches high, perfect condition, no chips, breaks, etc. Pendulum and back door are correct. 8-day movement is running, striking half hours on a Cathedral gong. Very unusual case. Ly-Ansonia No. 2561.

Not one of the large cases, only 11.25 inches high, but it makes uLa Savoiep for that deficiency with the pink colors. This is one of the colors decorators are using and generally sell quickly and privately unless you can find one in a collection like this. I always say near perfect, but this one is so pretty we have to say perfect all over. I guess the only thing some folks would miss is the open escapement, but if you are buying for decorating, not collecting, the one piece dial is preferred. Great yellow, rose, and white flowers front and sides, some gold sprinkled around. The clock is complete with the typical movement and other attachments. Ly-Ansonia #2612.

It was both etched in the case and stamped on the case, before the firing. It is 12.75″ high and 11.25″ wide, clean inside and out, perfect case. There are very faint hairlines or imperfections in the 2 piece porcelain dial. Brass sash, rings, and bezel, all polished. Correct hands, open escape mechanism, and pendulum. Movement as always is 8 day, half hour gong strike, running good. Unusual coloring scheme, primary color is cream, with coral-pink highlights on the top and sides, and around the outer edge of the front. Beautiful yellow, purple, and pink flowers. Ansonia Clock Co. “Lydia”, ca 1894.

One of the figural clocks most collectors are trying to find for their collections. It is a much larger clock than the pictures in the catalogs depict. It stands 19 1/2 inches high, and is very heavy. The metal is finished in Barbedienne, a member of the gold family. To point out just a few of the figures on the clock, starting at the base; sea serpents make up each of the 4 corners extending down to the feet. There is an eagle on the base with banners in his mouth that reach up each side to the head of a goddess. There are cherubs standing on each side of the urn. The urn top appears to have some fresh finish. There is a rams head in the center above the dial, same on the back. The cherubs have a bow over their shoulder. The later Lydia’s did not have that feature. Gilt 2 piece porcelain dial with open escapement, silver dial ring, beveled glass. Movement is 8 day, striking on a gong. This is a very ornately decorated clock, complete with a back door, correct pendulum, and hands. Ly-Ansonia No.1585.

Ansonia Clock Company, “Lydia”, ca 1894-1904. This clock was completely restored by Bruce Baziluk.

In his restoration process all the old (what is left) finish is removed and the new finish is then applied. This gives it the exact look it had when it left the Ansonia factory 100 years ago. It stands 19.5 inches high. He refinished this one in silver, which is one of the many finishes Ansonia used on their metal clocks. The clock is perfect in all respects, except, I left the bows off accidentally when taking the picture. Look at the picture No. 251 to see how the bows should look. 8 day movement, half hour gong strike, running. Ly-Ansonia No. 1582.

You would have tosee it in person to really appreciate the complete restoration of this outstanding early Ansonia clock. Bruce Baziluk refinished it in silver, which is one ofthe finishes Ansonia used on some early pieces. I donÕt know where they are, but you just never see one on the market. The catalog pictures almost showyou nothing. I will try to describe it but there is too much detail to doit adequately. The four feet are sea serpents that are intertwined on thesides. Above them, on each side is the bust of Lydia?, and standing aboveher is a cupid with bow and quiver. The cupids are reaching up toward theurn which is designed to look like a pool of water with lily pads. At thebottom-front, an eagle with wings spread. Above the eagle is the unusual dial, sash, beveled glass, hands, and open escapement mechanism, all done up insilver, except for the brass numbers and brass inner dial. Above the dial, are a rams head, and then the urn on top. Total piece is almost 20 incheshigh and 12 inches wide. 8 day movement strikes half hours on a gong. Thisis one nice, big clock, beautifully done up. Awfully tempting to keep a whilelonger as the prices keep going up much faster than the stock market. Ly-Ansonia No. 1585.

Ansonia Clock Co. figural clock, the “Lydia”, ca 1894.

This is a large clock standing 19.5 inches high and very heavy. The case is covered with cast ornaments top to bottom. Cupids peering into the fountain, bows on their backs. There is a rams head top center above the dial, identical head on the back side. Below the dial is a large eagle with banners in his mouth that stretch up each side to the large goddess figures. Sea serpents are resting on the 4 large feet. Many other figures too numerous to mention. Gilt metal dial ring with raised numerals, open escapement, correct hands, silver dial ring and sash with a beveled glass. The movement is 8 day, striking a gong, running. Correct pendulum and metal back door. Case is finished in Barbedienne, which is one of the gold shades. This is a very ornate clock that we rarely see for sale. There weren’t a great many made and what were made are being held by Ansonia collectors. Ly-Ansonia #1585.

Came from the factory finished in Barbedienne or Syrian Bronze. Cameto me with a new coat of gold-bronze colored paint. It looks very nice andwith a little effort it could be made to look like Syrian Bronze. I thinkthe experts use some kind of toner and rub into the repainted metal. Thetwo pieces stand almost 17 inches high, is all there with a shining backdoor, correct pendulum, and a recently cleaned and oiled movement, runningstrong. It is an 8 day movement, striking a gong on the half hours. Frenchsash, 2 piece porcelain dial, open escapement, all perfect. Not perfect isthe sorry glass some cheapskate put in the refinished clock, rather thana correct beveled glass. It is 8 day, striking a gong hours and half hours, 2 piece porcelain dial with open escapement. Hairlines and chips abound. I would order a replacement dial ring from Timesavers. Base, statues, clock tower, have been refinished some time in the past. Black enameled base is 17 1/2 inches wide and total clock height is 15 inches. A bronze plaque on the front of the base says, “Sir Isasc Newton: Contemplating the World”. A very attractive case and statue combination. Original and complete except where noted. Excellent black walnut case with the original finish, the polished case has been rubbed leaving a nice sheen. Some finish has worn off around the brass dial ring and bezel. The dial is original, darkened slightly as paper dials will, particularly after 100 years of use. Putty around the top glass is original and largely still intact. As usual we see wear on the gold-silver around the bottom glass. There is a near perfect black label, inside the case. This fine 8 day, half hour striking clock, appears to be 100% original, and is running nicely. Ly-Ansonia #655.

The bottom half of the case has a tan cast, apparently due to someone over-oiling the movement in the past. The fancy porcelain dial has red fleur-de-lis between each numeral and an embossed and gilded center. The Delft inspired paintings on this case are of windmills and sail boats.
