The last in the 6 set series of crystal regulators made with Royal Bonn Porcelain tops and bases. If you have never seen a complete set in the beautiful rich colors used by Ansonia, you have missed a treat. This clock is Cobalt Blue with plentyof gold accent. 8 day movement striking half hours on a standing Cathedral gong, and is running nicely. French sash, 2 piece porcelain dial, visible escapement, and correct hands and pendulum. All 4 glasses are beveled and perfect. The clock runs fine but should be serviced if you plan to addit to your collection. If you prefer original this is it, if you like thembright you will need to clean the polished brass and rich gold ornaments asthey probably have never been cleaned. This model is 17-1/2 inches high. in good original condition. This clock is the color of a light gray pearl, with a rainbow glaze, and gold and green highlights. Porcelain dial and all beveled glass are excellent, and there are no chips nor cracks in the case. A few of the gold highlights have been rubbed off due to regular dusting. Retains original fancy pendulum with cast and gilt top and bottom. Runs and strikes OK, but would benefit from cleaning. There has been considerable demand for these Bonn crystal regulators over the past few auctions. Height 17 º”

The outstanding coloration on this particular clock speaks for itself; we took the photo in sunlight so there would be no doubt about the colors, and there are some resultant shadows on the dial. Ansonia Clock Company “Crystal Regulator No. 4”, ca 1906.

This is an early model No. 4; some of the models made in 1914 had flower decorations and a different top design. If you have Ly-Ansonia, check pages 134-138 to examine the complete set of eight clocks. You will notice that many were in the Jean Braucht collection. This clock and the following No. 1 were part of the Braucht collection of perfect Royal Bonn Crystal Regulators. This one is Cobalt Blue, 17.75 inches tall, plenty of gold accents, polished brass and rich gold ornaments, Royal Bonn top and base, beveled plate glass on all sides, twopiece porcelain dial with visible escapement. As always, the movement is 8 day, half hour gong strike. The Braucht’s spent over 40 years acquiring and restoring their set of perfect crystal regulators. Ly-Ansonia, page 136.

Jan 2022 – #28 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Crystal Regulator No. 3” This is the first time I have seen this finish on an Ansonia porcelain (or any porcelain); R.O. Schmitt’s called it “opalescent grey” but that doesn’t do it justice, and neither do my photos. There are hints of pink and green, depending on how you view the clock, and it has a very pearlescent/opalescent sheen ­- it’s quite unusual. There are four good, beveled glasses, tarnished brass on the posts, and a flawless signed dial on this 18-inch-tall regulator. The signed 8-day time and half-hour strike movement is running and striking as required; there is one ruby and one steel pallet on the escapement. No recent sales of this opalescent model. $1200-$1800.

Actually the movement, dial and glass are fine on this clock, but someone has rubbed much of the gold highligHeight off and then replaced it with gold paint. The base color is an iridescent gray, with green accents, and it is quite photogenic. If you have a technique for restoring the gold, you could make a nice clock of this. Royal Bonn porcelain tops and bases were used on all 8 of the series and many different colors and decorations on the eight models. This 18.25 inches high case is pearl to light gray, gold high-lights strengthened. No breaks, chips, or cracks anywhere on the case. The polished brass ornaments around the 4 beveled glasses have not been cleaned or polished in some timed. All glasses are good, 2 jar imitation mercury pendulum is correct, as is the 8 day movement with open escapement. Strikes half hours and hours on a standing gong. 2 piece porcelain dial is also near perfect, hands are correct. Ly-Ansonia, page 135.

The porcelain is in good condition, no chips, cracks, or crazing, and the gold highlighting Four beveled glasses, no chips, tarnished brass on the corners, a two-part porcelain dial with the Ansonia logo, no chips or cracks, and correct hands. The 8-day, half-hour strike movement does not want to run and needs attention, perhaps just a cleaning. I suspect it has not been run in many years. These clocks were first manufactured by Henry J. Davis in 1874. Three different case styles were patented and six different models were eventually offered. The movement is marked “H. J. Davis, New York” with Geneva stopwork. This movement is very similar to an Ansonia and was probably made for him under contract. The brass ornament that mounts on the top of the dial is missing, also one walnut rosette is missing above the mirror. The clock has a very nice Davies label on the back. The dial has brown stains from age; dial center re-papered [no logo], new statues are from another Davies model (easily removed). Original dome intact; shown behind clock to avoid glare (lines on dome are tape). Height 17Ó $600-$800

Condition: Walnut case in good condition with original finish. Original paper dial is pretty good for its age with some scratches and wear. Top trim on the dial plate is missing. Old single barrel pendulum is not correct; old hands from another clock. Movement is signed Ansonia. Davies was a brilliant designer and promoter and around 1885 became the General Manager of the Ansonia Brooklyn Plant. This clock has a C. 1875, Davies label. Movement recently cleaned to high standard and running well. Ht. 15.25″

Condition: Walnut and case in very nice condition with original finish. There is a small piece missing on the front edge of the base. The signed movement has been shifted down from its original position and needs to be repositioned. Most of the gilding on the original bezel is intact. Paper dial is worn and abraded. Hands are original. The base is stamped “Davies Pat’d”. There is also a very nice clean label on the back. Original pendulum is also market “Davies Pat’d”. Dome is a replacement and does not fit the base, and is a bit short, reason the movement was moved downward. This can all be corrected if you find a taller dome. Height 16.25 inches

This model would have had a cupid in the center of the base, behind the pendulum. The catalogs show the cupid with, and without a base. The hole in the case indicates this one had a cupid without a base The base is stamped, “Davies Pat’d”. The movement is an 8 day Waterbury Clock Co. with hourly strike on a nickel bell. The Crystal Palace No. 2 Extra models with Waterbury movements were illustrated in the 1875 American Clock Co. catalog, while the same clock is shown in the 1880 Ansonia catalogs. The only thing I see that makes it an “Extra”, is the fancy bezel. This pendulum is correctly stamped, “Davies Pat’d”. The glass dome is a good, correct, replacement. Like all clocks in this collection, it is running. The dark oak cased clock is 17.5″ high with the dome. Ly-Ansonia, pages 91-99.

Ansonia Clock Co. “Crystal Palace No. 2”, Ca 1880.

Evidently some of the No. 2 models came without a statue, this one has a statue, although it is a modern plastic exact look a like. I spent far too much time examining this clock trying to decide if it was modern or old, then happened to remember where it came from. The man who refinished this old clock made it look like brand new, which he likes to do. He said he replaced the mirrors and dial, sanded and polished all the wood, cleaned all the brass and even painted black the levers in the old Ansonia movement. The 8 day movement is running real strong and strikes a nickel bell each hour. Clock is 17 inches high, 20 inches high with the too tall, new dome. Ly-Ansonia, pages 96-97.

Antique Ansonia Crystal Palace No. 1 Extra Clock

Jul 2021 – #166 Antique American Clocks Ansonia Clock Co. “Crystal Palace No. 1 Extra”, ca. 1880. Ansonia made an early and a later version of this model; this is the later version, where the figures differ from those on the early model (see page 95 of Ly’s book Clocks & Watches) The clock stands 19 inches tall with the dome (note that the dome is cracked in back); without the dome it is 17 inches tall. The Extra had a fancier bezel than the No. 1; note the turquoise coloring in the indentations of the bezel, also seen on the Ansonia Monarch. The dial is old paper with some yellowing, but is correct, as is the two-barrel pendulum and both statues, which may have been repainted but show wear. The mahogany base is missing one rondel on the right next to the bell; the mirror is original. This example does not have a label. The 8-day time-and-strike movement is running and striking a nickel bell with a nice sound on the hours and half-hours. This model is popular and relatively common, currently selling for $250 to $400.

Condition: the imported dome is new (and with fish-eyes and blemishes). The movement is an earlier one with rectangular plates. Note the top portion of the Geneva stop is lacking, a common situation when repairman don’t have the patience to set it up. This version has statues of the Oarsman and the Spear Fisher. The oar is intact, but now loose in his hand, as is the spear in the ladies hand; figures are excellent.. Paper dial has darkened some with age, but overall good condition. New paper dial. This model was made by H. J. Davies and was first shown in the Waterbury Trade Catalog of 1875 and in the Ansonia catalog of 1880. Pendulum is the correct one for this clock. Beautifully restored (or original) condition. I donÕt think thegreen could have been restored on the dial surround and statue bases. Thewhole clock looks like it has been in a sealed container since 1880. Another of the MillerÕs almost perfect clocks. It is 8 day, bell strike, 17-1/2 incheshigh with the glass dome. Paper dial is not signed or soiled, would take it to be a replacement. As usual with the Crystal Palaces, you can always find some things that don’t look exactly like the pictures in the catalogs. The figures for one example, the gun is resting a little more to the left, the oak base isn’t rounded quite like the catalog pictures. All I can say for sure is, it is awfully nice. This clock with these statues, back brace, movement, pendulum, etc. is pictured on page 95 of Ly-Ansonia. The case is oak, but stained to resemble walnut, and it has been refinished, statues repainted, and a new paper dial installed. The mirror, bezel, pendulum, etc. are original. The dome has bubbles in the glass, fits the base perfectly, and stands 18 inches high. If you want this model with a dirty dial, statues with little original paint, this clock is not for you. It is ready to put in the best room in your house.
