in generally good condition. The dial has some tarnish and the minute markings are gone. Someone has touched up the numbers with black paint (poorly). Retains proper signed Ansonia movement, that ticks and strikes, but would benefit from service. This line of clocks was only offered in “Colonial Brass Finish” over iron, and on many the brass is worn down to iron; this one is still presentable. Height 11 inches

Antique Ansonia Monarch Clock

Jan 2020 – 20 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Monarch”, ca. 1880. A nice example of this higher-end parlor clock from Ansonia, almost 25 inches high with a beautiful walnut finish, not too dark and not to glossy. The door glass is old with a nice stencil in good condition; the heavy metal dial with an enlarged sash retains the turquoise paint in the indentations, giving the clock an interesting look. This in-painting is usually polished away. The signed paper dial is evenly yellowed and could be replaced; the hands may be replacements. The interior backwall is covered in black paper, still mostly all there; there is a label on The signed, 8-day movement is running reliably and striking on the hour on a cathedral gong; there is also an alarm that strikes on a bell (untested). The pendulum is an unusual Ansonia-signed adjustable pointer model that was probably an upgrade; there is also a signed Ansonia key. The urn on top is probably a replacement but it is stylistically correct. Some Monarchs have a grain-painted finish on the base and a brass ornament behind the drawer pull, but many do not, so I think this is year-to-year Monarchs in good condition like this one still sell for $350-$450 at major auction houses; Horton’s sold one in very similar condition in 2017 for $450.

Jan 2020 – 53 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Monarch”, ca. 1880. A popular Ansonia shelf clock with a very fancy cast brass dial surround and elaborate carvings. It stands 24 inches tall in walnut. The case is in good condition with a few nicks and scratches. The urn finial is missing the topmost piece, and the side arms may be replacements; the door glass is a proper replacement. The dial is painted and signed; the 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking on a nickel bell and there is a fancy two-barrel pendulum and a signed beat scale. Compartment in the bottom front to store the key. example; these still sell for upwards of $300.

Note the burl walnut around the base. The door glass is likely original, retaining most of the silver stencil. The cast brass dial bezel is outstanding, retaining the turquoise coloring; the dial is a glossy paper replacement with some foxing. The 8-day time and half-hour strike movement is signed and running, striking a cathedral gong on cue. The two-barrel pendulum is correct. An alarm strikes on a brass bell, untested. Black paper inside, a dark label on the back. The drawer holds a key. A very nice example but for the missing wings on top. AAC sold a slightly better example a year ago for $292.

Ansonia Clock Co. “Monarch”, ca 1880.

This is one of their high end mantle clocks, has a wood urn on top, a drawer in the base, it is doubled on the sides meaning two ornaments in duplicate on each side, a ladies bust on top, and some intricately carved pieces all over. The 24.5″ case is made of black walnut, has bronze ornaments and a French sash. This clock has the original crusty finish, and is very dark and smoky. The case has the original dial, fancy bezel, a special two barrel pendulum, and a signed 8 day movement with the alarm movement in the bottom. The drawer was stuffed with newspaper clippings and a letter written by an exotic dancer who owned the clock and sold it to some friends. It seems the dancer shot her husband who had taken up with a younger woman. She kept a 16′ long python in the house. No wonder the husband crawled in bed with another woman. Another article told about the python and how she was selling her large home and moving to Europe. The letter was written to the couple who had bought this clock from her. The tale is too long to tell here. Ly-Ansonia No. 1780.

The case has its original finish with minor scratches. There is a small damaged area on the molding on the lower right side. The paper dial is in good condition but has darkened in places. The stenciled glass is original with some loss of the pattern towards the bottom. The two scrollwork decorative handles for the sides of the top urn finial are missing, but unfinished replacements are included. Nearly complete label on the back. Very nice glass front pendulum. The movement ticks and strikes, but was not tested long term.

As usual in these complicated, designed clocks, the cases varied slightly year to year. This case (compared to pictures in the Ansonia books and other Monarch’s I have had) differs in a few ways. Starting at the top, this one has a finial instead of the common urn. The bottom drawer has only a knob, no applied wood piece, no evidence of ever having anything different. Etchings all around the sides of the door are different. Dark black walnut case is 25″ high, never refinished, excellent glass, French sash, original 2 piece paper dial, brass rings, 2 jar pendulum, and original label on the back. Burl walnut was used around the base and the top. The case being so dark doesn’t do the burl walnut justice. 8 day, half hour strike, running. This clock has been in storage several years, probably should be serviced. Ly-Ansonia #1780.

Several different clock companies made this model but this case appears to most closely resemble Ansonia’s “Monarch”. The dial and bezel are definitely Ansonia. The movement is a signed E. N. Welch, Forestville, Conn and appears to be original to this case. Tran duy Ly’s Welch book indicates that such cases may be found with Welch movements, so this is not necessarily an incorrect clock. The case has been refinished and is now a very light walnut color with a high gloss finish. The paper dial is original and in nice condition with some age darkening, The hands are period. The stenciled door glass is original. The pendulum rod is a replacement and will need to be cut down to fit properly.

There are other small chips of wood here and there; the faux graining on the drawer and curved panels will need restoration as it is dark and partly missing. Still has lots of potential. C.1900, Ansonia, Model 502, Royal Bonn porcelain china clock in very good original condition.

This would rate outstanding if not for a little discoloration to the case under the dial, probably from over-oiling the movement at an earlier time. The colors on the case are elegantly sublime, a soft green with darker green shadows and gold highlights, and the case has no chips nor cracks. Open escape dial is perfect and with good Bonn trademark on the rear. This clock was cleaned recently (repair sticker) and is in good running order. For details on this hard-to-find model, see Ly’s Ansonia book (1998), page 628. It is not apparent in the photo, but this case is “pierced” above the dial under the arch. Height 10 1/2″

Came from the factory finished in Barbedienne or Syrian Bronze. Cameto me with a new coat of gold-bronze colored paint. It looks very nice andwith a little effort it could be made to look like Syrian Bronze. I thinkthe experts use some kind of toner and rub into the repainted metal. Thetwo pieces stand almost 17 inches high, is all there with a shining backdoor, correct pendulum, and a recently cleaned and oiled movement, runningstrong. It is an 8 day movement, striking a gong on the half hours. Frenchsash, 2 piece porcelain dial, open escapement, all perfect. Not perfect isthe sorry glass some cheapskate put in the refinished clock, rather thana correct beveled glass. Two people advertise in the NAWCC Mart that canfit you a nice beveled glass for about $25. Ly-Ansonia No. 1505.

in good, as-found condition. This clock had been in storage, and we had to scrub off the fly spots. The bronze finish has long been absent, but the spelter itself has an antique look. Note the left wing on Mercury’s helmet is bent (but not broken). The movement is complete and sound and the porcelain dial is absolutely perfect. Original fancy cast hands intact as well. Ansonia Clock Co. figure clock, “Mercury”, ca 1894.

This seated statue is sometimes seen on other bases and sometimes seen with wings on his helmet. The clock is 17.5 inches long, 15 inches high. One thing you can’s see in the catalog pictures and maybe not in our picture is the long lizard on top of his helmet and mythical lizard things on the urn. The gold was repainted but with some cleaning and tightening of screws you may just love the clock anyway because the two piece porcelain dial is perfect, and everything is on the case that is supposed to be there. The urn is broken at the base but when it is tightened down you can’t tell it. If it bothers you order a replacement urn from Timesavers. The movement as always is 8 day, half hour gong strike, outside escapement on the dial, running and striking. Ly-Ansonia No. 513.

Violin is held under his chin with a screw that is missing; we used tape for foto. Bow is held in his right hand with a set screw that is still present. Rear dust cover is a new piece of flat brass cut to fit, and the hinge is not now attached….is in bag. Ansonia Clock Co., figural clock, a rare model, “Melody & Motion”, ca 1894.

This double statue is also very large at 25 1/2 inches wide and 20 1/2 inches high. The metal statues and clock tower are resting on an enameled iron base with metal claw feet. Most of these statue bases have etched designs that are gold filled. This clock is good as new, restored by a true craftsman who is becoming nationally known, Bruce Baziluk. He refinished the metal in a Syrian Bronze color. Movement is 8 day, striking half hours on a gong. Excellent 2 piece porcelain dial, open escapement, heavy beveled glass. Everything is correct and could pass for an original factory product. This model is not only extremely rare but beautiful. This should be a keeper for someone.

in walnut and in very good restored condition. The only item that keeps this from being excellent is a spider web on the porcelain dial by the left winding hole. The case has been professionally refinished and nicely polished. This clock uses Ansonia’s double weight time movement (both great wheels turn against the center shaft), and with a seconds bit. The finials are original, left one with repaired dowel. A very attractive clock. Height 52″
