C.1895, Ansonia “Juno Swing” Clock in very good original condition.

This is a one family clock consigned by a lady in Seekonk, Mass, who inherited it from her grandmother. They took it to the House of Clocks in Rhode Island, and he cleaned the movement to render it running. Brass balls retain original dirt and oxidation, and the statue with original finish and minor pitting; hands and all hardware original. Support stud looks like it was soldered in very long ago and you can only detect this on very close examination under the dirt; also baton has come unsoldered in her hand is just setting there. Overall nice example for those who enjoy original patina. Height 28 1/2″

This is a nice example with no breaks in the statue. The statue was painted gold many years ago, but the pendulum and movement balls retain their original bronze which has appropriate wear. The hands are original. The ball has one dent and the top decorative garland is intact, but bent. Overall an above average Juno that is sure to please. Height 28 inches

Usually Juno is matched with the statue “Muse”, and the pair together are called, “Muses”. The black enameled iron base has a few small paint chips, which any of the bases will have if they haven’t been recently refinished. Complete with the feet and very elaborate front ornaments. Clock tower has the correct urn and side pieces. This clock has the unusual brown dial, recessed circles with good gold . French sash, beveled glass, open escapement recessed in the inner dial, and great Ansonia hands. Entire tower and statue finished in a Japanese Bronze color, and about as good as you will find not to be refinished recently. The statue is complete with the wand and triangle Correct pendulum for this 8 day movement. Strikes half hours on a gong. This clock is one to keep. Ly-Ansonia No.535.

Jan 2021 – 72 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Jumper No. 2”, ca. 1891. The No. 2 Jumper is slightly smaller than the No. 1, at 14.5 inches tall. The nickel plating on this example is a bit dull and I cannot exclude the possibility that part or all of it has been repainted. Nonetheless, it looks good and the paper dial is clean; the hands are correct. doll matches the girl in the catalog illustration (Ly, Ansonia Clocks & Watches , page 66) and she is also bobbing happily. The one-day movement is signed. These two look good together! The No. 2 Jumper seems to be a bit more common than the No. 1, with two sales in 2018 for $600 and $700 at Wooten & Wooten and Fontaine’s, respectively.

Thirty-hour time only movement with seconds dial. Silver plated canister (with relief flower decoration), spelter stand and top decoration are intact, but have some wear on original plating. There is an epoxy repair on cuff around spring exit at bottom of canister (not readily seen). Paper dial is a proper copy with Ansonia trademark and 1886 patent date, but the movement is a bit crooked in the case, and the spring wants to rub the cuff and stop the doll. It is identical to the Ansonia “Jumper No. 2” pictured in LyAnsonia No. 111. The movement is not signed and it is not exactly like the movement pictured at No. 112. The dial is not signed, nor does it have a seconds dial. It could be German, French, or American, I am not sure. It is very old, not a reproduction. The movement is one day and in running condition. The tin can case body has etched designs all over it. Good hands, glass and dial.

Jan 2021 – 71 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Jumper No. 1”, ca. 1891. Ansonia made three novelty “bobbing” clocks that remain popular; I have two of them here. The No. 1 is 15.5-inches tall in a bright nickel finish; I think it may have been replated. The dial is old paper, signed, and the hands are correct. The bisque doll does not match any of the dolls in the catalog illustrations and so it is likely a replacement, made in Germany (on the bottom); note that one side of her swing is broken off. The one-day movement is signed and running, and the little girl is bobbing happily. You will be too if you win one of these novelties! Schmitt-Horan sold one online last fall for $300.

as-found. This clock was shipped from London in a candy box and the box arrived crushed; the top trim broken off and the stand bent. Fortunately Ansonia made these parts out of brass and the stand can be straightened and the top soldered (it is just setting on the top for photo). The dial has a small water stain, but is very good. The suspension spring and stop are MISSING, and doll is a new repro (German style – should be American style). Movement is otherwise sound. Hands original.
