C.1895, Ansonia Clock Co., MECHANICAL CLOCK, 8-day time and strike, enameled iron case with cast metal sailors, the ships wheel rocking back and forth.

Condition: About half the handles to the ships wheel are broken away and missing. There is some wear to the original finish on the sailors and bridge area and the flag; gilt dolphins are still bright. The dial hands and rest of the case are very nice, including the marbleized finish on the “faux onyx” side trim. Movement is complete and sound, and the cradle that holds the “ships wheel” is complete. Ly assigns a value to this clock of $2500 when perfect. Height 19 inches

This model is shown in Ly’s book on Ansonia clocks on pages 186-187; an early form had a different base style. The walnut case is 29 inches long with an old and possibly original finish. The door glass and mirrors are original; in fact, everything is original, even down to the black paper backing inside. The signed Ansonia 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running just fine, striking the hours on the signed cathedral gong. A double-barrel pendulum and a signed beat scale complete the ensemble. Remains of a label on the back. R.O. Schmitt’s sold one in 2017 for $1800; it is the only sale in the Antique Clocks Price Guide. $1000-$1800.
