    Antique Ansonia Triumph Clock

Jul 2021 – #215 Antique American Clocks Ansonia Clock Co. “Triumph”, This is the iconic mirrorside that must be in your collection of mirrorside clocks. The 24.5-inch black walnut case has a perfect finish, the stenciled door glass is original with little wear, the side mirrors are period, as are the cupid statues, with an old finish. The signed paper dial shows some wear, especially at the time-winding arbor; the hands are correct. The Ansonia 8-day, time-and-strike movement is running and striking on the hours and half-hours on a cathedral gong; the alarm strikes on a brass bell and winds separately (not tested). The silvered pendulum matches the nickel dial ring. There is a metal figurehead at the top and a metal ornament on the burled walnut base, and a good label on the back. This clock is about as good as it gets for this model. AAC sold a Triumph two years ago

in fair to good condition, with restoration. Note the little “tails” on the top carving are missing, the dial is from another clock and double drilled to fit this one, the case refinished, top finials incorrect, and partial rear label is dark from solvent. See image of movement and note top two pivots on time side are riding in “instant bushings” applied with sheet metal screws. Well, it runs and strikes, but a purist would take exception to these items. This is a $700 clock today in proper order, so our estimate reflects current condition. It does look quite nice. Ansonia Clock Co. mirror side, “Triumph”, ca 1880.

This clock although 120 years old has all original wood parts, dial, glasses, beautiful glass pendulum, and metal ornaments. It doesn’t appear to have ever been cleaned and doesn’t need to be. It has lived in a clean environment all its life. The walnut case is 24 1/2 inches high, brass ornaments are tarnished as might be expected and cupids have some loss of finish, but overall a very good example of this very collectable model. 8-day movement, strikes hours and half hours on a silver bell. Ansonia Clock Co. mantle clock, “Triumph”, ca 1880.

These were made in black walnut and oak. Both models are pictured here side by side. The cases are 24 1/2 inches high. They came with silver or gold washed cupids. Both of these sets are original which you rarely see on these clocks as they were easily lost. Paper dial has some fingernail scrapes. Burl sections on the base with proper ornaments and finials, top and bottom. Good label. 8 day, gong strike, alarms on a cup bell. I have sold dozens of this model in our auctions but have never had a pair that were all original, clean, and running. Ly-Ansonia No.1722 & page 444.

Called a mirrorside by most folks today. 8 day, running, strikes half hours on a cathedral gong. Original Ansonia beat scale and pendulum with a slow-fast dial, original glass, dial, and silver cupids on the sides. The spikes in the cupids are slightly bent so they are not all the way in their slot. Bronze ornaments, top and base, Ansonia key. 24 1/2 inch black walnut case, burl look around the base. Extremely nice and all original. Definitely a keeper. Had been part of a fine collection for many years. Ly-Ansonia No.1772.

Ansonia Clock Co. “Triumph”, C. 1880, or more commonly called “Mirrorside”.

Several companies made this almost identical clock. The case is oak, which we rarely see, stands 24.5″ high, and was cleaned a long time ago, not refinished. Everything is original and very nice, except we aren’t sure about the statues. They are white metal and are hollow at the base up about 1 inch, which leads me to think they are original, however the casting isn’t as sharp as I think originals should be. Ornaments are bronze. Plate glass mirrors are clear and sharp. Glass is original as is the dial, pendulum, and lower finials. The top finials don’t look like those in the catalogs. 8 day movement, time, strike, and alarm, runs like a top. Strikes a cathedral gong on half hours, alarms on a brass bell. A piece of the label identifies the clock as Ansonia. Change the poor wrinkled paper dial and you will have a very nice clock. Ly-Ansonia #1772.

    Ansonia Clock Co. mirrorside (maybe)

Ansonia Clock Co. mirrorside (maybe) “Triumph”, C. 1880.

We have a mixed bag here. The gentleman who sold me this collection of mirrirsides said this was an Ingraham. No doubt because the pendulum is Ingraham. When I removed the dial I discovered the movement is an 8 day Sessions. The 24″ walnut case could be the Ansonia Triumph, the Waterbury Oxford, the Gilbert Occidental, or the New Haven Occidental, I am not swift enough to tell the difference. There is a full label on the back that is so dark you can’t read it. It runs, strikes a coil gong. Wood parts all would appear to be original, statues are contemporary. Two things we definitely need to do, change the movement and the pendulum. Maybe you can decipher the label.

Ansonia Clock Co. mirrorside, “Triumph”, ca 1880.

Silver cupids with the silver front glass. Cupids are replacements; glass has lost some paint in the middle, the reason being Bubba has the glass in backwards and every time you touch the glass you rub off paint. The rest of the bad is that the two top finials were missing. I am including two that will be suitable after you stain them. 8 day movement, half hour gong strike, original dial, good 24.5 inch walnut case with the carved head piece, turned finials, and other nice wood work. Plate glass mirrors and bronze ornaments are correct. The bronze has never been polished. Ly-Ansonia #1722.
