C.1885, Ansonia Regulator no. 14, less bottom. This clock merits

your time in making a bottom to complete the case. The gridiron pendulum bears the plaque of M. L. SHEEHAN (jeweler’s), 785 8th Ave, New York. The pinwheel movement is original and sound; the final glaze coat on the dial was a little weak and a couple of numerals have started to fade. The hook for the weight has been improperly replaced (an easy correction). The case retains original top, carved trim and burled panels and is quite attractive. If it had the original bottom and finish, we would have expected this to bring $10,000. Height 71 inches

the case retains a very nice original finish with an extremely well done professional repair on one of the ears on the crest. The sweep seconds hand is a replacement. The fancy gridiron pendulum and weight are original. There are remnants of glue on lower section of glass door where “CORRECT TIME” placard was affixed (included with clock): This is a fabulous example of a very decorative and impressive American jeweler’s regulator.

Condition: the case has been stripped and refinished and could use a bit more finish on it. The dial has been re-papered. The last person to clean and re-string the clock did not realize that the pulleys belong in the top corners of the case and the weights should hang down the sides, and they had the weights hanging from the pulleys. We just placed the weights in the bottom for the foto [this is a minor thing to correct]. Pendulum, beat scale, and balance of hardware are original. See Ly Ansonia book fig 567, note illustration is mis-drawn with pulleys over weights, since all this series, Prompt, General and Bagdad, are direct cord to weight and similar movements. in black walnut and in very good restored condition. This case style is very similar to the Waterbury “Rosedale” (lot 305), and Mr. Rappaport had them hanging side by side. The case has been attractively refinished; there is a line of small veneer chips along the edge of the door, that are only visible on close inspection. The brass pendulum bob has a small crease in it; weights are new. The original paper dial is excellent and retains Ansonia logo; original beat scale intact. This clock employs the Arrow top double wind 2-weight movement used in many of Ansonia’s mid range wall clocks; see Ly 1998 book, figure 566. Clean and running. Height 52″

Large and heavy mahogany case is 52 inches high, clean and shining. The top has been replaced, but very hard to tell. Came with a great collection of Ansonia clocks that belonged to an elderly couple getting their affairs in order. This is a double weight time only, 8 day movement. Everything is clean and bright, including the pendulum, weights, and bezel. The paper dial with seconds dial is very clean considering the age of this clock. The beat scale is original. A very nice clock that we don’t see real often, particularly in nice condition. Ly-Ansonia page 174-175.

The base “Sybil”, is often seen with other statues such as, “Gloria” or “Melody”. The statue “Winter” is one of the rare ones. This combination still has the Art Noveau green color on both pieces and holding well. The cherubs and other ornaments on the base have darkened over the years, has never been cleaned. It stands 24 inches high, and is 10 3/4 inches wide at the base. Great porcelain dial, hands, sash, bezel, and beveled glass. 8 day, strikes on a gong, half hours. Negatives first: the top urn on the clock is slightly bent (not broken), and the entire set has been heavily sprayed with gold radiator paint. Now on the plus side, this is one of the best looking sets we’ve seen in a while, and the spelter trim appears to be 100 percent intact, no missing bits nor corners. The open escape movement is in good order, with good dial (one minor hairline at 9:30) and with original faux mercury pendulum, vials intact. The heavy beveled glass is all in good condition. Condition: First model is a large alarm clock, the “Amazon” in nice condition with a nickel plated case with some tarnish primarily on the bell. Original paper dial has some staining. Hands are original. The second smaller nickel-plated example is in good condition with more generalized tarnish. Set stem is missing. Dial is very clean and hands are original. Small pin pallet movement is similar to Ansonia “bouncer”. Height 8.75 inches One bid for both.
