About the Ansonia “Durate” Clock

Title: Ansonia Durate Clock Model – A Collector’s Guide

The Ansonia “Durate” clock model, produced by the renowned Ansonia Clock Company between 1917 and 1930, is a striking example of American craftsmanship in the early 20th century. This timepiece falls under the mantel clock category, designed to gracefully sit atop a fireplace or shelf, adding a touch of elegance to any room.

The Durate’s case is typically constructed from materials such as mahogany, walnut, oak, or rosewood, with intricate carvings and ornate details that reflect the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts movements popular during its production era. The clock features a distinctive rounded-square shape, which sets it apart from other mantel clocks of the time.

What makes the Ansonia Durate particularly collectible is its combination of style, quality, and innovation. The clock boasts a high-quality brass movement with a pendulum bob, a feature rarely seen in mantel clocks of this era. Additionally, the Durate’s striking dial, often adorned with Roman numerals, Arabic numerals, or decorative motifs, adds to its visual appeal.

Notable features of the Ansonia Durate include its unique chime options, such as Westminster or Whittington quarter hour strikes, and the option for a night silent switch that silences the clock during quiet hours. The durability of the Durate, combined with its aesthetic appeal, makes it a highly sought-after addition to any antique clock collection.
