About the Ansonia “Pizarro and Cortez” Clock

Title: Ansonia “Pizarro and Cortez” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Ansonia “Pizarro and Cortez” clock is a captivating novelty clock that showcases the company’s artistic prowess in both mechanical and decorative aspects. This intriguing timepiece, produced between 1880 and 1920, stands as one of the most sought-after collectibles from Ansonia’s extensive repertoire.

The “Pizarro and Cortez” clock is a mantel clock, designed to be placed on a shelf or mantlepiece, rather than mounted on a wall. The case is typically crafted from bronzed cast iron, brass, or German silver, with intricate details representing the historical scenes of Spanish conquistadors Pizarro and Cortez. These finely sculpted figures stand atop an elaborate base that often features depictions of ships, cannons, and other accouterments of the era.

What makes the Ansonia “Pizarro and Cortez” clock collectible is a combination of its rarity, historical significance, and artistic merit. The intricate detailing on both the figures and the base, coupled with the innovative use of materials and techniques, sets it apart from other mantel clocks of the time. Furthermore, the subject matter—the conquest of the New World—resonates with collectors interested in American history and culture.

Notable features of the Ansonia “Pizarro and Cortez” clock include a finely crafted pendulum bob suspended between the figures, as well as the clock’s striking mechanism, which produces a melodious Westminster chime on the hour. The clock’s dial is usually decorated with applied Arabic numerals and intricate detailing that complements the overall design.

C.1894, Ansonia Clock Co., “Pizarro and Cortez”, 8-day time and strike, double figure mantel clock.

The figures and tower were hand painted maybe 50 years ago and paint is flaking off. Some of the original bronze finish looks to be intact underneath; most importantly there are no apparent breaks nor losses to the figures. The black enameled base is original, with some chips. The porcelain dial is perfect as well as the beveled crystal. The movement is properly signed. Would be $2000 if original finish. This model sold for around $60 in 1894 (compare to $4.50 for a walnut shelf clock). That was a great deal of money. Height 20.50Ó $1,000-$1,200

C.1894, Ansonia Clock Co., PIZARRO and CORTEZ, double statue figural clock, 8-day gong strike, open escapement on dial.

Condition: Cortez is lacking his index finger, and Pizzaro is lacking his sword, and much of the original finish is missing, just showing gray spelter. The porcelain dial is perfect, and the movement is complete and sound. If the statues were perfect, this would fetch at least $2000, so there is room for restoration expense.
