About the Ansonia “Fisher and Falconer” Clock

Title: Ansonia “Fisher and Falconer” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Ansonia “Fisher and Falconer” clock model, produced between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is a fascinating addition to any antique clock collection. This striking timepiece belongs to the mantel category, designed to stand on a table or shelf rather than be mounted on a wall.

The clock’s case materials primarily consist of cast iron and brass, with intricate detailing that showcases Ansonia’s craftsmanship during this era. The design features two birds, Fisher and Falconer, perched atop the case, symbolizing the balance between fish and game hunting in the Victorian era.

What makes the Ansonia “Fisher and Falconer” clock model particularly collectible is its unique combination of aesthetics and craftsmanship. The exquisite attention to detail, such as the realistic bird sculptures and ornate base, sets it apart from other mantel clocks of the time. Notable features include a finely-tuned movement, a chime option, and the option for either a brass or porcelain dial with Roman numerals.

Collectors should look for original condition, complete with the original bird sculptures and any additional decorative elements such as gilding or painted details. A well-preserved “Fisher and Falconer” clock is not only an eye-catching piece but also a testament to the artistry and technical prowess of the Ansonia Clock Company during its golden age.

C.1880, Ansonia

C.1880, Ansonia “Fisher and Falconer” swing clock.

This clock is clean and in good running order. However, the very top of the bow trim (just the top loop) is missing and the left arm of the falconer was repaired maybe 30 years ago. Finally, the knurled set knob is absent from the rear and you need to use a watch key (included) to set the time. This model uses the small iron base, that is original, and the 4 cast feet are intact, gilding rubbed away. Despite these small shortcomings, this is a good example of an early and hard to find clock. Height 25.5 inches

Sold: $3,900 | Date: 4/26/2003 | Source: R. O. Schmitt Fine Arts

Ansonia Clock Co., New York, C.1880,

Ansonia Clock Co., New York, C.1880, “FISHER and FALCONER” double figure swing clock, with canister style arm.

the arm is in excellent original condition, with a good dial, only slight darkening of dial paper near 8. The statues retain great original patina, however the clock was bumped a bit in shipment and both statues have been pushed maybe a half inch to the right, bending the top brass bridge support [see this in foto of clock]. A careful workman can deal with this. Runs fine. See Ly reference material, item 3009; current price guide = $4500. Ht 27″

Sold: $2,760 | Date: 5/15/2010 | Source: R. O. Schmitt Fine Arts

Ansonia

Ansonia “Fisher and Falconer” Swinging Clock

This all original clock has an unmarked tin can movement and a signed paper dial. The clock is running at this time. (The dial is stained; the falconer’s upper hand looks like the top most finger was broken off and soldered on at some time; the fisher girl has a break on her left foot thru the arch, and the falconer has a very thin line on her right ankle visible on one side only. The falconer girl has some messed up toes on her left foot, I am not sure if that is normal or not.) 24″ Tall
