About the Ansonia “Don Juan” Clock
Title: Ansonia “Don Juan” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide
The Ansonia Don Juan clock, produced by the esteemed Ansonia Clock Company between 1897 and 1906, is a noteworthy mantel clock that graced many Victorian homes during its era. This clock model, named after the renowned Spanish nobleman Don Juan, was designed to captivate collectors with its unique blend of style and mechanical precision.
The Don Juan clock boasts an intricate cast-iron case, meticulously crafted to resemble a miniature Gothic cathedral, complete with pointed arch windows and finial crosses on the towers. The case is typically adorned with elaborate floral patterns and decorative elements, which not only add to its aesthetic appeal but also enhance its collectible value.
What sets the Ansonia Don Juan apart from other mantel clocks of its time are several notable features. Firstly, it was one of the first clocks to incorporate a Westminster chime, adding an auditory element to its visual charm. Secondly, it was equipped with an 8-day movement, ensuring consistent and reliable timekeeping for over a week without winding. Lastly, its unique design, inspired by Gothic architecture, made it stand out among more conventional clock models of the era.
For collectors, the Ansonia Don Juan offers a captivating blend of historical significance, artistic craftsmanship, and mechanical ingenuity. Its rarity, due to limited production during its short-lived run, further increases its allure. When acquiring an Ansonia Don Juan clock, it’s essential to inspect for original components, such as the dial, hands, pendulum, and chime mechanism, to ensure authenticity and maintain its value.
