This is one of Ansonia’s largest and heaviest clocks. We have seen several of this model and no two were finished the same. All Ansonia collectors know that you could order any of the large statues with the base, or leave off the statue if that suited your taste. Various catalogs and books show several different statues with the clock. The enameled iron and silver frieze panels are the only parts the same. Ornaments and other metal pieces vary in finishes. The curved three dimensional frieze panels make this clock distinctive from all others. I judge they are French or Roman influenced scenes. The dial is exceptional with silver around the numerals, brass inner dial with the cupid in a hammock and the open escapement mechanism. Covering the dial is a French sash and beveled glass. The metal around the dial and around the top and base is finished in Syrian Bronze, the same as the statue Dagobert. The feet and several applied ornaments are finished in Verde Bronze. Like all their clocks of this type, the movement is 8 day, striking a gong on the half hours. Top and base are enameled iron and in good condition, although you can tell that the statue has been on and off many times. Ly-Ansonia No. 1588.
