About the Ansonia “Jumper No. 3” Clock
Title: Ansonia “Jumper No. 3” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide
The Ansonia “Jumper No. 3” is a noteworthy mantel clock produced by the renowned Ansonia Clock Company between approximately 1890 and 1910, marking its production during the late Victorian era. This timepiece, with its distinctive design, is highly sought after among antique clock collectors.
Typical case materials for the Jumper No. 3 include mahogany, walnut, and rosewood, often adorned with intricate carvings and gilt decorations. The rectangular case design features an open face that exposes the inner workings of the clock, a unique characteristic for mantel clocks of this era. The dial is usually brass, with Roman numerals and a seconds hand.
What makes the Ansonia Jumper No. 3 collectible goes beyond its aesthetic appeal. Its mechanical movement, known as the “jump” movement, is one of the notable features that sets it apart from other clocks of its time. This movement causes the minute hand to jump in one-minute intervals instead of sweeping continuously, which was a novelty during the late 19th century. Additionally, the clock’s high-quality craftsmanship and the rarity of survival examples contribute significantly to its collectibility.
In terms of notable features, the Jumper No. 3 is equipped with a pendulum that swings back and forth within a glass tube, which is visible through an opening on the case front. The clock also boasts a striking mechanism, adding to its charm and functionality. Despite the complexity of the “jump” movement, the clock is relatively easy to maintain due to its robust construction.
