About the Ansonia “Eight Day Lever” Clock
Title: Ansonia “Eight Day Lever” Clock Model: A Collector’s Delight
The Ansonia “Eight Day Lever” clock model is a noteworthy mantel clock produced by the esteemed Ansonia Clock Company between 1887 and 1920. This model showcases Ansonia’s commitment to craftsmanship, precision, and aesthetic appeal, making it a highly coveted piece among antique clock collectors.
Typically constructed from brass or mahogany, the Ansonia “Eight Day Lever” clock boasts an elegant design that seamlessly blends function and style. The mantel-style case features a rectangular dial surrounded by intricate floral motifs, while the hood is adorned with a finely detailed foliate crest. The clock’s overall dimensions – approximately 28 inches high, 15 inches wide, and 6 inches deep – make it an ideal fit for any mantel or shelf.
What sets the Ansonia “Eight Day Lever” clock apart is its exceptional mechanism, known as a lever movement. This innovative design offered increased precision and timekeeping accuracy compared to earlier gravity-driven clocks. Additionally, the clock’s eight-day movement requires winding only once every eight days, which was a significant advantage at the time.
Notable features of this model include the Roman numerals around the dial’s perimeter, as well as the fine minute and hour hands. The pendulum is visible through a glass window in the case, adding to its aesthetic appeal. Furthermore, some versions of the Ansonia “Eight Day Lever” clock feature a striking mechanism that chimes the hours on a bell housed within the clock.

Ansonia Clock Co. “Eight Day Lever”, ca 1901.
Double wind, 8 day, movement, seconds dial, and slow-fast adjuster, all on the 5 inch paper dial. The dial is signed two places as well as stating it is “8 DAY TIME”. Great looking 9 inch, octagon, black walnut case, painted black accent ring, clean brass sash and rings. Although it has been in storage a long time, I wound it and it ran a while and quit. As clean as it is, oil may be all it needs. There is a full paper label on the back. Ly-Ansonia, page 207.
