About the Ansonia “Thebes” Clock

Title: The Ansonia “Thebes” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

1. **Clock Type and Era:** The Ansonia “Thebes” clock is a mantel clock, designed to sit on a shelf or mantelpiece. It was primarily produced between 1890 and 1920, during the height of the American Arts and Crafts Movement. This era is characterized by a focus on high-quality craftsmanship, intricate details, and unique designs.

2. **Case Materials and Design:** The “Thebes” clock is renowned for its striking design and the use of exotic woods such as mahogany, rosewood, and ebony in its construction. The case features elaborate carvings inspired by ancient Egyptian themes, with intricate motifs of gods, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics. The clock’s dial is often adorned with gold Arabic numerals and a minute track.

3. **Collectibility and Notable Features:** The Ansonia “Thebes” clock is highly sought after by collectors due to its artistic merit, rarity, and historical significance. Its unique design, influenced by the ancient Egyptian revival trend of the late 19th century, sets it apart from other mantel clocks of the time. Notable features include the beautifully crafted case, the ornate dial, and the high-quality movement, which typically runs smoothly with minimal maintenance.

4. **Additional Information:** It’s essential to verify the authenticity and condition of a “Thebes” clock before purchase. Look for original Ansonia hallmarks, such as a lion’s head on one side and an anchor on the other, along with the serial number. Condition plays a significant role in value, with fully restored clocks often commanding higher prices. The Ansonia
