About the Ansonia “Referee” Clock
Title: The Ansonia “Referee” Clock Model: A Collector’s Delight
The Ansonia “Referee” clock, produced by the renowned Ansonia Clock Company between 1876 and 1900, is a quintessential example of American craftsmanship in the realm of mantel clocks. This iconic timepiece was designed to be placed on a shelf or mantel, making it an ideal addition to any Victorian-era home décor.
The “Referee” clock is distinguished by its elegant and sophisticated design. The case is primarily made of mahogany, a premium hardwood known for its rich color and fine grain. The dial, typically white with black Roman numerals, is framed by a brass bezel adorned with intricate engravings that further accentuate the clock’s refined aesthetic.
What sets the Ansonia “Referee” clock apart from other mantel clocks is its combination of functionality and artistic flair. This model was one of the first to feature a hidden-wire suspension system, which allowed for smooth timekeeping without the need for unsightly chains or rods. Additionally, the pendulum bob, shaped like a miniature statue of Mercury, the messenger god, adds a unique and whimsical touch.
The “Referee” clock’s collectibility lies in its historical significance, exquisite craftsmanship, and rarity. As one of Ansonia’s most iconic designs, it is highly sought after by antique clock collectors worldwide. Notable features such as the Mercury pendulum bob and the hidden-wire suspension system contribute to its allure, making it a valuable addition to any collection.

The open escape movement is running; the porcelain dial has 2 minor hairlines at 8 and 2. Although not a Royal Bonn, this is a good looking clock for the beginning porcelain collector. Ansonia Clock Co., New York, “Referee” 8 day, time and strike porcelain mantel clock, c1901
The rich cobalt blue case is pristine with just the expected light crazing in the fired surface. The porcelain dial and beveled glass in the cast bezel are fine. The model name is verified on the back. The signed movement, with its steel pallet exposed escapement, ticks and strikes although the pendulum rod hits the bottom wood board so some adjustment is required. Ht 11″
