About the Ansonia “La Vire” Clock

Title: Ansonia “La Vire” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide

The Ansonia “La Vire” clock, manufactured between 1895 and 1900, is a remarkable mantel clock that graced many households during the late Victorian era. This exquisite timepiece is a testament to the high-quality craftsmanship of the Ansonia Clock Company, one of America’s most celebrated clockmakers.

The “La Vire” clock features an intricately designed case made primarily from bronze or brass, with ornate detailing that includes delicate leaf and vine motifs. The base is often supported by four lion paw feet, adding a touch of elegance to the overall design. The dial, available in various colors such as black, white, or enameled, showcases Roman numerals and a decorative border.

What sets the Ansonia “La Vire” clock apart from other mantel clocks is its unique movement, known as the Ansonia No. 180. This time-keeping mechanism, patented by Ansonia in 1894, features an ingenious compensated pendulum designed to minimize the effects of gravity on timekeeping accuracy. Additionally, the clock’s automatic night silence feature ensures quiet operation during evening hours, making it a desirable collectible for both function and aesthetics.

Notable features of the “La Vire” clock include its finely detailed chasing, repousse work, and rich patina that develop over time, adding to its antique charm. The combination of high-quality materials, exceptional craftsmanship, unique movement, and attractive design make the Ansonia “La Vire” clock a coveted item among antique clock collectors worldwide.

The clocks in this collection just get bigger and bigger. This La Vireone is 15 inches high, 14 inches wide. It looks huge sit-ting by the other clocks. There are columns on each corner, lions head above each of the front columns, large feet, simple design at the top, sides, and base, but the thin gold on the edges of the designs stand out and add to the clocks beauty. There are large yellow and rose colored flowers painted on the front and sides. Colors are turquoise at the top blended in with apple green and green, down to the feet. This clock like all their clocks has all the same movements, dials, etc. As expected this one is near perfect also. This is the first and probably last of this model I will see. Ly-Ansonia #2582.

C.1912, Ansonia Clock Co., “La Vire”, Royal Bonn porcelain china clock in excellent original condition (dirty, needs clean).

This case has the desirable 4-color case that came into vogue after 1910, starts at dark rose at the top, down to blue, then to yellow and green in succession. The hand painted flowers below the dial show nice detail. In 20 years of selling Bonns, this is the first La Vire we have had; note the delicate little pierced work at top center. The illustration in Lyis Ansonia book (figure 2582, page 606) does not do the clock justice; it is really impressive in person. Original movement has never been out of the case and needs cleaning. Height 15 inches
