About the Ansonia “La Vendee” Clock
Title: Ansonia “La Vendee” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide
The Ansonia “La Vendee” clock, produced between 1885 and 1920, is a striking example of the company’s artistic innovation and mechanical prowess. This model falls under the category of mantel clocks, designed to be placed on a tabletop or mantelpiece, making it an ideal addition for any antique clock collector seeking versatile pieces.
The “La Vendee” is renowned for its intricate cast-iron case, which depicts a scene from the Battle of Cholet during the French Revolutionary War. The battle’s namesake, La Vendée, was a region in western France where the rebellion took place. The detailed and historically significant design, coupled with the high-quality craftsmanship of the Ansonia Clock Company, contributes to the clock’s collectibility.
Notable features include a finely-tuned eight-day time-and-strike movement, a chiming mechanism that plays Westminster or Whittington quarters, and an ornate brass bezel adorned with floral motifs and military symbols. The clock’s case is often painted in rich colors such as red, green, or blue, further enhancing its visual appeal.
The “La Vendee” clock is not only a testament to Ansonia’s mastery of Victorian-era clockmaking but also serves as a captivating piece of historical art and a valuable addition to any antique clock collection. Its rarity and exceptional craftsmanship make it a sought-after collectible among enthusiasts of both clocks and history.

A spectacular Royal Bonn porcelain case, molded and fired leaving perforations and a flame top. The clock is so large and different that Tran Du Ly devoted one whole page to this clock in his Ansonia Clock book. There are several places it could have easily been chipped or cracked, but it has escaped any damage for 100 years. It is 8 day, half hour strike. 2 piece porcelain dial and open escapement. Very nice beveled glass, movement is sound, clean, and running. Case is cream colored with purple, red, yellow flowers. Ly-Ansonia, page 638.

Ansonia Clock Co. Royal Bonn case, named “La Vendee”, ca 1904.
One of their more stylish cases with the swirled top, open arches, narrow waist, and wide at the base. The white Bonn’s have come into their own in the last few years and have become one of our most poplar sellers. Very colorful painted flowers of pink, yellow, blue, and lavender. This case is very nice but to show it properly the brass should be polished. Correct pendulum and back cover but like so many we see the door may be a replacement. 8-day movement, half hour and hour gong strike, two piece porcelain dial, open escapement, and beveled glass. The clock is running but I would check the movement and polish the brass before you show it off. Ly-Ansonia, page 638.

Ansonia Clock Co. Royal Bonn case, “La Vendee”, ca 1904.
We have had this model in many colors, but this may be our first “baby blue” case. A lot of white, gold accent on the high edges, and the pretty yellow and purple flowers on the front and sides. Case is 14.5 inches high, 13 inches wide. Very good two piece porcelain dial, Arabic ring is white, inner dial with open escapement is cream. The case has no cracks or breaks but does have one small chip on the bottom of one foot. You can’t see it of course unless you turn the clock upside down. Metal back cover is not an Ansonia cover, but it serves the purpose. Original Ansonia pendulum bob. The 8 day movement has been serviced, it is running, and striking a gong on half hours properly. Ly-Ansonia, page 638. Valued at $1200 in 2004 catalog. We will deduct for the one tiny chip on the foot.
