About the Ansonia “Jumper No. 2” Clock
Title: Ansonia “Jumper No. 2” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide
The Ansonia “Jumper No. 2” is a celebrated mantel clock model, renowned for its distinctive design and exceptional craftsmanship. Produced primarily between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this model falls within the Industrial Revolution era when mass production of clocks was prevalent yet maintaining high-quality standards.
Characterized by its unique case materials and design, the Ansonia “Jumper No. 2” boasts a finely carved mahogany or walnut cabinet with elaborate floral motifs that epitomize the Victorian aesthetic. The brass dial features Roman numerals, intricate hands, and a silvered chapter ring, adding to its timeless elegance. The clock’s most striking feature is the jumping hour mechanism—a novelty in horology at the time—where hours are displayed by a small disc that jumps forward instead of moving continuously.
What makes the Ansonia “Jumper No. 2” particularly collectible lies in its historical significance, rarity, and superb workmanship. As one of Ansonia’s most iconic models, it represents a pinnacle in American clockmaking during the Industrial Revolution. The combination of a novel jumping hour mechanism with exquisite woodworking techniques renders each piece a cherished addition to any antique clock collection.
Notable features include the finely detailed brass pendulum bob swinging from the top of the case, and the striking spring-driven movement housed within the mahogany or walnut base. The striking mechanism can be activated by pulling a cord, causing the pendulum to swing back and forth while emitting an attractive chiming sound.

Antique Ansonia Jumper No. 2 Clock
Jan 2021 – 72 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Jumper No. 2”, ca. 1891. The No. 2 Jumper is slightly smaller than the No. 1, at 14.5 inches tall. The nickel plating on this example is a bit dull and I cannot exclude the possibility that part or all of it has been repainted. Nonetheless, it looks good and the paper dial is clean; the hands are correct. doll matches the girl in the catalog illustration (Ly, Ansonia Clocks & Watches , page 66) and she is also bobbing happily. The one-day movement is signed. These two look good together! The No. 2 Jumper seems to be a bit more common than the No. 1, with two sales in 2018 for $600 and $700 at Wooten & Wooten and Fontaine’s, respectively.

C.1890, Ansonia Clock Co., “Jumper No. 2” Bobbing Doll novelty clock.
Thirty-hour time only movement with seconds dial. Silver plated canister (with relief flower decoration), spelter stand and top decoration are intact, but have some wear on original plating. There is an epoxy repair on cuff around spring exit at bottom of canister (not readily seen). Paper dial is a proper copy with Ansonia trademark and 1886 patent date, but the movement is a bit crooked in the case, and the spring wants to rub the cuff and stop the doll. Will require patience to correct. The bisque doll is a reproduction. Height 14.5Ó $900-$1,200
