About the Ansonia “Hanging Antique” Clock
Title: Ansonia Hanging Antique Clock: A Collector’s Gem
The Ansonia Hanging Antique clock, a timeless masterpiece from the renowned American clockmaker, is a testament to craftsmanship and innovation in the realm of antique timepieces. This unique model defies traditional categorization as it is not a mantel, wall, or regulator clock, but rather a novelty hanging clock.
Characterized by its distinctive design, the Ansonia Hanging Antique clock boasts a case primarily crafted from brass or mahogany, adorned with intricate floral and geometric patterns. The clock’s most distinguishing feature is its suspension system that allows it to hang freely on a wall, adding a dynamic element to its aesthetic appeal.
Produced predominantly between the late 19th century and the early 20th century, during Ansonia’s golden age of production, this clock model became a hallmark of their innovative spirit. The Ansonia Hanging Antique clock is highly sought after by collectors due to its rarity, captivating design, and the prestige associated with the Ansonia brand.
Notable features include the finely crafted pendulum swinging from the bottom of the case and the ornate dial, often featuring Roman numerals and a seconds hand. The clock’s movement is typically a 3-weight time-and-strike mechanism, ensuring precision and durability. The combination of its rare design, exceptional craftsmanship, and historical significance make the Ansonia Hanging Antique clock an invaluable addition to any antique clock collection.

C.1900, Ansonia “Hanging Antique”
in very good condition, refinished. This clock is in walnut, and was received as an ‘antique wedding gift’ in 1965. The couple had it refinished to match their other walnut furniture and the stain is darker than we normally expect. The clock hung in the same spot for 35 years and we had to use the vacuum on it to get of the dust and cobwebs. The movement is still VERY dirty and will need service prior to operation (it is complete and sound). The original gilding on the ormolu parts is still very bright, and the original twisty weights with fancy end-caps and cast chain stops are all there. Height 46″ These have been bringing in the $7500 to $10,000 range, and our reserve will allow for cleaning and other minor attention. Reserve $6000

Ansonia Clock Co. “Hanging Antique”, ca 1904.
This is the cleanest, most original, and nicest Hanging Antique we have ever seen, or offered for sale. The quarter sawn oak case is near perfect, stands 46″ high, and is clean and polished. We bought this clock with a collection of near perfect clocks from a long time collector who only bought perfect clocks. We kept it for several years because we like it, but have lately been offering it for sale because of space limitations. All the brass is polished including the original weights, cast pendulum, and all the other pieces of brass trim all over the case. The 8 day movement is running, striking a gong behind the movement. The special pendulum stick is covered with a thin skin of brass, covered with designs, and it cannot be duplicated. We have seen many Hanging Antique clocks sell for $10,000 or more, and none were as nice as this one. Ly-Ansonia, page 178-179.

C.1890, Parts to an Ansonia “HANGING ANTIQUE”, including the dial and front panel with all cast trim,
the movement, including leader and hands, the central splat casting (tall alcove with lady), one side corbel, one side door, bottom splat and casting, center and side friezes and miscellaneous moldings. Except for one top finial, none of the top parts are there, no pendulum, chains nor weights. Still, when you figure a complete clock is worth $9000, there is a lot of raw material here for the handy craftsman, and you can check with Steve Sadowski for the casting that goes on the top.

this clock has some losses; the cast pendulum has been replaced with an Ansonia smooth pendulum. Oak case has lost its original finish and could use a coat of shellac. Cast ornaments need polishing and attention. Movement is complete and spiral weights are original. The dial is loose and has a replaced brass insert in its center. Ht 46 1/2″
