Antique Ansonia Georgia Clock
Jan 2021 – 6 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Georgia”, ca. 1892. Nobody does black mantel clocks like Ansonia, and there are four outstanding examples in this auction. The Georgia stands just over 13 inches tall and 17.5 inches wide with high relief alcoves and figures across the front and sides. Here the alcoves are painted silver and the figures are in gold; you can find examples with bronze alcoves and gold alcoves all with contrasting figures – see for example #7. The repainting was professionally done and shows; the iron case has also been re-lacquered. There is a two-piece signed dial with a visible escapement behind a beveled glass in the French sash; the pallets are ruby. The 8-day movement is signed with a rack and snail strike mechanism; it is running and striking on a cathedral gong without issue. There is no rear door. Schmitt’s sold a Georgia in 2017 for $2000; Horton’s sold one in 2016 for 1875. $1800-$2000.

Antique Ansonia Georgia Clock
Jan 2022 – #27 Antique American Clocks Ansonia “Georgia”, The Georgia stands just over 13 inches tall and 17.5 inches wide with a high-relief bronzed front and silvered figures in the alcoves. The decorative metalwork has been professionally restored but the case itself was not, and it shows a few small chips on the top and edges. There is a two-piece signed dial with cartouche numbers and fancy pierced hands, and a visible escapement with steel pallets. There is a thick beveled glass in the sash. The 8-day movement is signed with a rack and snail strike mechanism; it is running and striking on a cathedral gong without issue. There is no rear door. AAC sold a very similar Georgia last winter for $1600. $1000-$1600.

The case is in excellent condition with restoration to the finish. The porcelain dial has no hairline cracks or chips. The hands are original. The movement is signed.

Ansonia Clock Company “Georgia”, ca 1892. Enameled iron and spelter mantle clock refinished to the original colors by Bruce Baziluk, who specializes in restoring metal clocks.
This is one of half dozen or so large clocks that the collectors covet. One recently sold at Bob Schmitt’s auction for $3472, that was in “as found” condition, which means it had some problems, and we have seen them sell on EBay for $4750. This large case, with statues on front and sides, is 13.5 inches high, 17.5 inches wide. The statues and top ornament are silver and all other metal ornaments are Syrian Bronze, and the iron main case was enameled black. The fancy dial has cartouche numerals, fancy hands and inner dial. The 8-day movement has been cleaned and serviced so you can expect it to be worry free for some time. This clock should be as nice as any “Georgia” out there. Ly-Ansonia, page 382-383.

There is some wear to the finish on the cast figures and there is a minor bow to the right side of the iron base and the rear dust cover to the case is missing. Otherwise complete and sound. Height 13.5 inches
