Title: Ansonia “Dispatch” Clock Model: A Collectible Masterpiece of American Horology

The Ansonia “Dispatch” clock, a quintessential example of American clockmaking craftsmanship, is a mantel clock that graced households from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. This period falls within the Golden Age of the Ansonia Clock Company, which operated from 1853 to 1969, making the Dispatch model an integral part of their extensive production.

The Dispatch clock’s case is primarily crafted from mahogany or walnut, with intricate floral carvings and a polished finish that highlights its elegance. The dial, featuring Roman numerals and a seconds subdial, adds a touch of sophistication to the design. Notably, some versions may feature a minute track around the outer edge of the dial, enhancing its practicality while maintaining aesthetic appeal.

What makes the Ansonia Dispatch clock particularly collectible is its combination of exquisite craftsmanship, unique design, and historical significance. The meticulous attention to detail in the carving and finish, coupled with the mechanical precision of the timekeeping mechanism, make it a prized possession for antique clock enthusiasts.

One of the notable features of the Dispatch model is its distinctive movement, which is a 30-hour weight-driven timepiece powered by a gravity escapement. This mechanical marvel ensures consistent and accurate timekeeping, making it a reliable addition to any collection. in very good original condition. The pendulum in this clock is a small Ansonia model with T hook at top, but is not the same pendulum illustrated in the 1883 catalog, so we are unsure if they later dropped the fancy pendulum to save costs.., or what? In any case, the balance of the clock: finish, tablet dial, embossed paper back, etc, are original and good (some discoloration on dial). 8-day, time and strike on a gong; clean and running Height 30 inches

C.1890, Ansonia

C.1890, Ansonia “DISPATCH”, 8-day, time & strike, in excellent to original condition.

Note this is a little later model than the drawing shown in Ly’s Ansonia book (page 177, fig 573). This one has floral rather than geometric incising and a plain pendulum rather than the floral pendulum. Note also this one with gilt columns right and left that are plain on the 1873 model. Some wear and discoloration on the dial near the right winding hole. The tablet, dial and hands & finials are all original and this is about as good as it gets for an example of this model. Note Tran Ly prices this at $600 which is about 50% low, particularly in this condition which is nearly impossible to find on an ebonized clock. Height 30 inches
