About the Ansonia “Denis Papin” Clock

Title: Ansonia “Denis Papin” Clock Model: A Notable Addition to Any Antique Collection

The Ansonia “Denis Papin” clock is a captivating mantel clock that graces any antique collection with its unique design and historical significance. This model, produced during the late 19th century (approximately 1880-1900), represents the height of American clockmaking artistry in the Victorian era.

The Denis Papin is renowned for its intricate cast iron case, meticulously crafted to mimic the ornate style of Baroque architecture. The case features elaborate embellishments such as acanthus leaves, floral motifs, and intricate scrollwork. The clock’s base is often adorned with a polished marble disc, adding an air of sophistication and elegance.

What sets the Ansonia “Denis Papin” apart from other models is its association with Denis Papin, a French physicist who is considered one of the founders of modern thermodynamics. The clock’s design is inspired by Papin’s famous invention, the steam digester or ‘Papin’s engine’, which predates James Watt’s steam engine by over 50 years. This historical connection adds to its collectibility and value for antique clock enthusiasts.

Notable features of the Denis Papin include a finely-tuned brass movement, ornate gilt-bronze pendulum bob, and a decorative dial with Roman numerals. The clock’s striking mechanism produces a rich, resonant sound that is characteristic of Ansonia clocks. With its stunning design, historical significance, and high-quality craftsmanship, the Ansonia “Denis Papin” clock is an essential addition to

Ansonia Clock Co. figure clock,

Ansonia Clock Co. figure clock, “Denis Papin”, ca 1894.

This model must be fairly rare as we have had requests in the past to find one for collectors. Here is a nice example. 8 day movement, striking a gong on half hours, running. Good two piece porcelain dial, open escapement, beveled glass. There is a faint hairline on the dial, hardly worth bringing up. Note the base is very much different from other Ansonia statue bases. Mural of Roman characters goes around three quarters of the black enameled iron base. In the very center is a collage of weapons. Case is 16.25 inches high, 19 inches wide, and has a Barbedienne finish we believe to be original. It would appear from the dark picture in the catalogs that Denis is holding a pen. Another picture on the same page shows he is not. Our Denis is not holding a pen in his right hand. Ly-Ansonia, page 165.
