Title: Ansonia “Cymric” and No. 1176 Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide
The Ansonia “Cymric” and No. 1176 are esteemed mantel clocks produced by the prestigious Ansonia Clock Company between 1895 and 1900, marking the transition from the Victorian to the Edwardian eras.
Characterized by their intricate design and high-quality craftsmanship, these clocks boast ornate bronze cases adorned with Welsh Cymric (Welsh Dragon) motifs, giving them a distinctly regal appearance. The typical case materials include richly detailed bronze, often finished in green patina or left unpolished to develop a natural aged look over time.
The “Cymric” and No. 1176 clocks are highly collectible due to their rarity and the exceptional level of artistry involved in their creation. Notable features include the finely chased and repoussé decorations, intricate filigree detailing, and the unique combination of a traditional mantel clock design with an exotic, Welsh-inspired theme.
The “Cymric” model, featuring a brass movement and a 14-inch dial, is particularly sought after by collectors for its exquisite beauty and historical significance. Meanwhile, the No. 1176, known as the “Cymric Grandfather Clock,” offers an extended 20-inch dial, making it a striking addition to any collection.
These Ansonia clocks serve as a testament to the company’s unwavering commitment to quality and innovation during the late 19th century. Their collectible value stems from their rarity, historical relevance, and the exceptional craft
