About the Ansonia “Blackbird” Clock
Title: Ansonia “Blackbird” Clock Model: A Collectible Mantel Timepiece
The Ansonia “Blackbird” clock, introduced around the late 19th century, is a sought-after mantel clock model that showcases the craftsmanship and innovation of the esteemed American clockmaker, Ansonia Clock Company. This unique timepiece stands out among other antique clocks due to its distinctive design and exceptional quality.
The “Blackbird” clock is characterized by its intricately designed cast-iron case, which resembles a stylized bird, earning it the nickname. The body of the clock often features elaborate feather patterns, a beak, and feet, all detailed with a rich black patina finish. The case rests upon an ornate marble base, adding to its overall grandeur.
Collectors appreciate the “Blackbird” for several reasons. Firstly, it represents the transition period in American clockmaking from the Victorian era to the Edwardian era, around 1890-1910. Secondly, this model is a testament to Ansonia’s exceptional design and engineering capabilities, blending form and function seamlessly. Lastly, due to its limited production run and rarity, the “Blackbird” clock has become increasingly collectible over the years.
Notable features of the “Blackbird” clock include a 14-day time-and-strike movement, striking Westminster chimes, and a silvered dial with Roman numerals. The clock’s pendulum is visible through an open front, providing a glimpse into its mechanical heart. For antique clock enthusiasts, the Ansonia “Blackbird” clock offers both aesthetic appeal and historical significance, making it a valuable addition to any collection.

C.1883, Ansonia “Blackbird’, 30-Hour, as-found.
Although this time and strike clock is running, someone stripped off the black enamel door and base, down to the gesso. Note this clock has a great old pendulum with a brass female bust on a faceted star background. Minor plaster repair and some black paint will bring this back. Height 16′

C.1883, Ansonia Clock Co., “Blackbird”, 30-hour cottage timepiece.
The black ebonized case is in very good condition with just a little paint loss on the left side of the base. The original painted dial is in very nice condition. There is wear to the gilt incised lines on the case (gold accent is weak). The tablet is original and is the same design as shown in Tran Du Ly’s Ansonia clocks book, page 435, bird, butterfly & scythe (minor touch-up of the gold). The hands are original. There is a nice signed Ansonia round plate movement in the case. There is a good label on the back of the case; pendulum hangs to right of center as designed. Height 10.5 inches

Condition: The original black finish on the case has some wear, but is basically OK; tablet is original and nice; rear label with some losses, legible. Note crutch has been bent to one side by a child (I am guessing), and the pendulum leader/suspension is laying loose in the bottom of the case with the pendulum. Original dial with wear at numerals II and III from careless winding. Height 10.5 inches
