About the Ansonia “Belgium” Clock
Title: Ansonia “Belgium” Clock Model: A Collector’s Guide
1. The Ansonia “Belgium” clock is a mantel clock, a type of free-standing timepiece designed to be placed on a shelf or mantelpiece. This model was produced by the renowned Ansonia Clock Company between 1895 and 1900, during the height of the company’s production and innovation.
2. The “Belgium” clock is distinguished by its exquisite case design, primarily crafted from mahogany or walnut wood, with intricate carvings and gilded accents that create an opulent aesthetic. The clock features a hood with a rounded top, supported by finely carved pilasters, and a base with cabriole legs. A large brass-framed dial with Roman numerals is typically found in this model.
3. The Ansonia “Belgium” clock is highly collectible due to its impressive craftsmanship, the reputation of the Ansonia Clock Company, and the rarity of survival examples. Notable features include a time-and-strike movement with a hidden-spring mechanism, a Westminster or Whittington chime option, and a pendulum bob suspended from a brass rod within a glass dome. The “Belgium” clock is an excellent addition to any antique clock collection, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
