Catalog Description:
C.1885, Ansonia, MARBELITE No. 5, painted black, and with a couple of cracks on the porcelain dial, but otherwise complete and sound. For those unfamiliar with this portion of the Ansonia line, Ansonia owned a rubber company and for around 5 years offered these molded hard rubber versions of their popular black mantle clocks. They are light and durable and much more practical than the iron and marble clocks they competed against, but were discontinued for lack of sales. They are uncommon, and yet we offer a half dozen in this week end\'s sale. Note also that they are listed in Lys\'s Ansonia book under "Mantel Clocks enameled Iron cases, pages 307-308. I am sure if Mr. Ly had realized they were rubber at the time of printing, he would have put them in their own category. Height 17.5 inches
